People who get their coffee from Starbucks are suckers who don't know what good coffee is. I know *nix better than many of the people I know and work with and am highly paid for my IT skills by major employers in the field. The fact that X windows is an optional install, or that Unix tools that I never interact with aren't documented with man pages, doesn't bother me one single bit. As usual, you're full of shit, and clearly don't have a good understanding of Apple or Apple's real customers. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Apple doesn't need to provide things it doesn't have an interest in maintaining. The community may provide it, if they wish. If not, that's on them. Users may install it at their option, making it an optional install. > That is a good example of Apple moving OS-X away from Unix. No, it's an example of Apple doing what every other major operating system vendor does: removing things it no longer maintains or supports. Unix and Linux distributions do it too. If part of the base OS is no longer supported or maintained, it may be removed by later versions - especially for things that are moving out of the support channel. If you are working in the IT field and you aren't flexible and knowledgeable enough to be able to get shit done under less-than-ideal circumstances, you don't deserve to call yourself an IT worker - you're nothing more than a button pusher, and we can safely outsource your job to the lowest payers in India or halfway across the globe without losing any skill. I've worked in this field all of my life and I can count on one hand the number of times I've actually needed an X windows server on my Macs. The fact that it is an optional install is a non-issue. Real IT workers adapt and overcome - others whine and get nothing done. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Real IT workers adapt and >> overcome - others whine and get nothing done. > > So, you admit Apple is shifting away from Unix software on OS-X ? Way to ignore just about everything I wrote. Your suggestion is ignorant and laughable. Previous OS X versions made installing and using X11 more problematic due to the fact that Apple mixed free open source software with their own proprietary software to get the job done. XQuartz, in comparison is fully open-source and Apple developers contribute heavily to it, as they always have. Also, X11 is rife with its own set of security issues, and making it an optional install actually increases security for the vast majority of users who don't need it there to begin with. Like I said, I've been in the IT field all my life and can count on one hand the number of times I've needed X11 on my Mac. It's just not something many people actually need. And Apple has done similar things with command-line tools installed by Xcode, like gcc, git and so on. Now we have a fully open source X11 environment and can install command-line compilers and so on without having to install Xcode, if we wish. These are big improvements. If you truly believe Apple doesn't know that every tech giant and startup plasters their offices with Macs and Apple gadgets to attract the highly-desirable smartest & best *nix geeks, developers, and other IT workers in the field, you're a fool. And if you can't figure out how to do something as simple as install XQuartz, you probably should change to a less demanding field of work. : ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. That's one way of looking at it. Another way would be to say that, Apple has relied on the Unix layer as a fundamental part of the entire environment, even though it's hidden away from the user most of the time. If Apple's merely taking advantage of this happy accident, why bother with any command line utilities at all? They do develop and ship new user-accessible command line utilities with practically every release. These are often documented.

In choosing a Unix core to replace the good old single user without pre-emptive multitasking MacOS, Apple not only evolved its OS, but also opened it up to serious and scientific programmers AND made it possible to quickly port many Unix commercial/serious applications. When you have a brand spanking new OS, making it easy to bring in a lot of new apps is important. And the fact that even some Apple apps "spawned" supbrocesses that called unix level functions (hence that problem with Itunes) indicates that even Apple used the Unix finctionality under the hood, just as CDE, DECwindows, KDE and others have done. With "Back to Mac", Apple seems to have decided that it no longer needed the Unix users and wanted instead to get those iPhone users to buy Macs and as such, the Unix side became less important. And that is a problem with proprieraty operating systems: the vendor can change direction with the wind, leaving the installed base stranded because the vendor is now seeking a different market to grow and is letting go of one of the original market niche.

Nice try, but nope. Apple hasn't decided to abandon us Unix users, no matter how often you make that claim. As a representative of Unix users, I can say we are still quite happy with Mac OS X, and we also appreciate all of the "Back to Mac" features such as Continuity and so on that make working with Macs and iOS devices easier than ever. One doesn't have to give up Unix goodness to have great usability. The two are not mutually exclusive, as you suggest. Apple understands this far better than you apparently do. > And that is a problem with proprieraty operating systems: the vendor can > change direction with the wind, leaving the installed base stranded > because the vendor is now seeking a different market to grow and is > letting go of one of the original market niche. If you are stranded, it's of your own doing. The rest of us are happy with Apple's direction. Maybe you should stop trying to speak for all of us and just speak for yourself instead. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. It's true though. Apple will go whichever way the wind flowing from Tim Cook takes them. It seems to me that he's probably far more interested in selling iPhones to developing nations than he is in keeping OS X from unraveling. It will be a bit of a pain to go back to a Free OS, and I will miss OS X in general, but I like to think that I don't have Stockholm Syndrome.

You should use the latest available version of XQuartz. Learn more *Apple* *created* *the* *XQuartz* *project* as a community effort to further develop and support X11 on OS X***. The XQuartz project was originally based on the version of X11 included in Mac OS X v10.5. There have been multiple releases of XQuartz with fixes, support for new OS X features, and additional refinements to the X11 experience. Apple is a contributor to the XQuartz project and has worked to ensure that X11 works as expected in OS X with the latest available versions of XQuartz. (emphasis added) Seems to me that Apple isn't moving OS X away from unix.
