I guess you won't be surprised when you can't find your backup disk

She's always there when she's needed.

Ha, true. Perfect!

I do recall (incorrectly?) she ran off when others thought she was
needed. But I guess she truly knows when.

And my computer has seven accounts, Adventures, Encounters, Endeavors,
Escapades, Exasperations, Explorations, and TaliesinSoft, the first one
being my regular user account and the last one my administrative
account.

In addition to the built in iMac disk, I have four external drives, one
containing three partitions, Cowboy, Campfire, and Sunset, another also
containing three partitions, Midnight, Sunrise, and Sunset, and two
single partition externals, Ascension and Descension. Two of the
partitions are for nightly SuperDuper! backups, and two are for Time
Machine backups. The remaining partitions are for special storage.

And, yes, I have no problems keeping it all straight! :-)

I'm not nearly so imaginative in naming drives, but I don't want nor
have a problem remembering which is which. The drive in my iMac is
named "System". The 4 TB Firewire drive is named "Time Machine". The
two USB drives that are used for alternating clone backups are named
"Superduper" and "Dupersuper". And there is one extra USB drive with
three partitions: "Snow Leopard", "SL Time Machine" (yeah, I know,
don't bug me), and "Archive". That last drive is almost never
powered up.

The LAN is a little more interesting. My main iMac is "Gandalf". My
wife's Macbook Pro is "Arwen". The old 17" iMac running 10.6.8 down
in the dark, dank basement utility room is "Gimli". Gimli is
connected by a short ethernet cable to the Verizon-supplied router
named "Gollum". Wi-fi is turned off on Gollum. In the garage at the
end of a 25-foot ethernet cable is the Airport Extreme, "Shadowfax".
The Airport Express range extender is "Treebeard", and the iPad is
"Aragorn". The names are all mnemonic in one way or another.

The names of my hard drives / partitions are very simple:

   - "Mac OS X" for the system disc and OS X applications
   - "PowerMac G3 266" for the OS 9 system and applications
   - "Storage" for downloads, 'play' files, etc.
   - and another one with my business name for work files

Then there's three of USB sticks - two uses to backup my work files
(business name with "Backup" appended) and one used to transfer files
to other locations (an Imation Nano called "Nano").

Plus the G4 MacBook with it's hard drive called "MacBook G4".

maybe you should think about changing that name, as there is no Apple
computer called MacBook (Pro) with a G4 processor.
It's either an iBook, PowerBook with G4 processor or a MacBook (Pro)
with Intel processor(s).

Sorry, I did mean iBook. I had been checking prices of various MacBook
Air and Pro models for a customer and simply typed the same name here
by mistake.

I don't use special names like that when I have too many. Heh. I used to
use ant themed names.

I feel so old-fashioned.

My main disk is called MacintoshHD, and my backup disks are called
TimeMachine and SuperDuper.

Yep, easier to remember and find.

Those are more modern names than the ones I use.

I had cute names for years, then I got more and more disks and my
imagination started failing with age and now my drives (in my Mac Pro)
are named Bay_1, Bay_2, etc. Makes it easy to find the right one when
I'm swapping them around too. I've still got a USB drive named Godzilla,
from when I thought it was a pretty big drive.

I, too, tend to give volumes more utilitarian names in order to make
working with them as quick and pain-free as possible.

Fun. Don't name a computer "up." I like the poem.

My computers have always been named after film directors. My Mac Pro is
peckinpah (s'all right, I can type 50-60 wpm) and my Linux laptop is
kubrick. I've had kurosawa and hitchcock and even fincher. The oul'
Woman's imac is just "Mary's iMac" though, not to confuse her.
