Apple's had GPU problems in lots of Mac models historically.

I'd call it a cooling problem, as I'm not seeing this in
an air conditioned room with the computers on the floor,
where the ambient temperature is lowest (not that we did
that for this reason, though). Also, rendering 4k video
is definitely going to heat up the graphics processor..

So, the quality is not then declining?

Heh.

Possibly. Considering that radical new designs often need tweaking to
work out problems that arise with edge cases, I usually try to wait for
a few revisions to be made before I invest in such hardware. Sometimes
I'm able to wait things out; other times I bite the bullet with the
level-headed understanding that I may encounter issues that the designer
did not intend and that may naturally take time to solve. Walking on the
cutting edge can result in lacerations. : ) Of the people I know with
the new Mac Pro, most of them have few issues with their units.
Meanwhile, the haters like to latch onto complaints from vocal
minorities so they can act as if those complaints apply to everyone.

Processors have an inverse linear relationship between operating
temperature and speed with a factor of 0.85 MHz per degree C.
That's not much compared to today's speeds, but were something
running close to the edge, and allowed to heat up, things like
the scrambled video in the cited screen shots can happen. I've
had my share of other heat-related electronic problems, when the
air conditioning dies and people want to keep working, but not
yet with the new Mac Pros.

Definitely. I've seen it happen with several different machines I've
owned in the past. And I've made it happen by overclocking GPUs - natch!

Good to hear. I'm trying to get as much life out of my 2008 Mac Pro as I
can before I eBay it and get a new one - hopefully after Apple makes
some revisions to the model. I'm still very satisfied with the speed of
this machine. I just wish it didn't consume so much energy and double as
a heater in the summers. : )

The new MacPro has a huge design problem in this area, drawing dust from
the floor and throwing it up. Airflow should be from top to bottom if
you insist on having a vent at the bottom.

What this means is that dust bunnies will be born inside the machine
hampeing airflow over some parts that could be temperature sensitive.

The old MacPro had air intake several inches above the floor.

On a desk however (probably where Jony Ive figured his prized museum
work of art would be displayed), dust should not be a problem.

The new Pro is small enough that there is no need to put it on the
floor. A desk corner or shelf would be fine and allow more convenient
access to the USB/TB ports - esp. since most "working" storage for large
projects will be outside of the unit.

You just don't get it, Alan. It *must* be placed on JF's floor, because
that's the only way his stupid little troll works!

That's where mine would go. Right beside my monitor. No reason to put it
on the floor making the ports harder to reach when it takes so little
desk space. Well, there's one reason: so JF can troll about it here. ; )

DO you really know people with enough fee space on desktop to put a
MacPro AND NOT BE AFFRAID TO PUSH IT OFF THE DESK as they shuffle stuff
around ?

They don't slide off desks easily. You're being foolish - as usual.

But then you need to consider all the peripherals you need attached to
the MacPro which no longer has the space to hold them (disk drives,
optical readers etc).

Yes, you'll argue that Apple's marketing examples all show setups where
there are no such peripherals attached. But in real life, I suspect
that is not the case, and it would explain Tim Cook stating the MacPro
sales are very low.

Moving the goal posts so soon, JF? You run out of brain power already,
or what?

Where did Tim Cook say that Mac Pro sales are very low? I'll wait for
your citation. Or are you lying yet again in another lame troll attempt?

Demand seems to be outpacing supply:

the mac pro has never been a top seller. according to apple, 80% of
their sales are macbooks and the bulk of the remaining 20% is the imac.

those were from last year, when they had early production issues with a
new design in a brand new factory. plus, there was pent up demand since
the mac pro hadn't been updated in several years.

JF seems to be claiming that the fact that more peripherals are needed with the
new Mac Pro that sales are low. That's very different from "Mac Pro is
not a large percentage of overall Mac sales".

That has little to do with JF's assertion above that the lack of
internal expansion somehow explains "very low" Mac Pro sales? Stop
trying to muddy the waters.

I don't see where more peripherals are needed though.

Oh, wait, he's still harping on about how "Professionals: have to attach
multiple hard drives to their Mac Pros and pile them on their desks,
isn't he?

What a prat.

Exactly. If I replaced my current Mac Pro tower sitting under my desk
with a new Mac Pro sitting on top of my desk, I wouldn't need any
additional peripherals either, since I don't keep additional hard drives
installed inside of it, and I don't have any PCI cards installed. And I
know this applies to many people out there.

> Oh, wait, he's still harping on about how "Professionals: have to attach

Which is bullshit for many professionals, since many already have such
peripherals, and many don't need them.

I just call him what he is: a troll.

And the Mini?

I wouldn't be surprised if the new mini is seeing a sales slump. I mean,
I bought one, but I was disappointed with the machine that was
available.

We'll prolly buy another soon, to replace SWMBO's 2009 (IIRC) Core 2
Duo Mini - although we'll most likely keep it to run the slide scanner.
I'd expect to get the middle range model with a Fusion drive. That
makes it similar to my 2011 Mini that I added an SSD to.
