It's not 500 our of 20 million. So far it's 256 out of 579 that rated
Yosemite with one star out of five, which is over 50 percent of
reviewers who gave it a one-star score.

There are many laments among the reviews, such as "worst OS ever" and
people writing that they had reverted to a previous OS or withing that
they were able to.

Of course there are always complaints about new operating systems, but
it seems this one in particular is being loathed by many.

Obviously, the Apple Web site's Yosemite download page is not the only
center for customer reviews on Yosemite. There are thousands of other
centers for feedback where people are also likely giving similarly
preponderantly negative feedback.

And are you sure the Yosemite Web page it's a very inaccurate overview
of cusomer sentiment? I'm self-employed and I get feedback from my
customers all the time. In terms of negative or positive feedback, the
feedback I get is almost 100 percent positive all the time (close to a
five-star rating) -- both by email and verbally. I find that if my
customers love my products, many of them will enthusiastically express
that feeling to me.

So I've postponed my own 'upgrade'.

And what the millions of the Mac addictts who love to express their
love of things that they love about Apple? I think if they loved
Yoseimte, a larger percentage of them would write positive reviews on
the Yosemite download page.

There are far more one-star reviews than five-star reviews on that
page. There are 150 one-star reviews out of 579, which is less than
one in four, and only a small percentage gave a four- or three-star
raview.

You're giving weight to a meaningless sample. That small number of
raters is in no way representative of the wider cohort of Yosemite
users. Maybe if one could poll all Yosemite users 98% would hate it,
vice versa--I don't know. But I know that the sample you're dwelling on
is meaningless.

And I know that Yosemite works just fine on five of my Macs of various
ages.

Most of them simply use it, and don't even know about the comments page
or even the download page; they get it through the Mac App Store.

People who don't like something are more prone to complain about it
than people who like it are prone to go out of their way to praise it.

What I referred to was the Mac app store, which leads to the Yosemite
download page, which also contains the user reviews on the same page as
the download link.

True.

Huh? When I upgraded to Yosemite, it was done all within the Mac App
Store; it didn't lead me to any download page.

When I type apple.ca and then search on the resulting page for
Yosemite, this page appears:
http://www.apple.com/ca/search/?q=yosemite

When I click on the top link, titled "Yosemite", this page appears:
http://www.apple.com/ca/osx/?cid=jm.

Then, when I click on either of the "Upgrdade Now" buttons, the page
with the Download button button at the top and the reviews appear below
the first screen-full. That page doesn't have a URL bar, so I can't
give the URL

That's in a web browser. We are talking about the App Store. You can
access it from the Apple menu.

I reached the page- had but three reviews on it:

<https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=915041082&mt=12&ls=1>

There is probably a link to other reviews but did not see it.

The first was written by a moron who couldn't figure out how to download
it, and has major problems with everything. It was one star.

There were two others, both with four stars.

Where is the page of over 100 bad reviews?

You are not talking about the Mac App Store app; you are talking about

As I recall, when you run the installation script, it spends a large
amount of time downloading stuff.

On the same page, perhaps, but below the view of most, I'd guess, as my
2888x1800 Retina display has it "below the fold" if you will.

So if they don't even see the reviews, how does the ordinary person
even know that they can leave one?

Why? I have never once felt compelled to write a review for any Apple
product on the Mac App Store, except for a negative review for 10.8
Server.

Like most people, I am thousands of times more likely to leave a review
if I have a criticism to make, even if the overall review is positive:

"Really love this product, 4.5 stars, but it needs more cowbell."

BTW, for a laptop, Yosemite compared to Snow Leopard gives an "Activity
Monitor" that is extremely useful in detecting power (electricity) users
at the process level.

Found out some innocusous temperature monitor was on of the biggest user
of power because it woke up every second. Adjusted its parameters and it
make quite a difference in power use.

Where Apple fails with its new versions is proper education of users on
how Apple expects them to change how they work. As a result, I suspect
few people make use of the new stuff and try to disable the new stuff.

I still gave no clue about Spaces/Mission Control/whatever not only what
it is capable of or how to use it and have no inclination to start a
archeological search on the internet to find a good web site to teach
me. So it goes unused.

Do you mean you haven't even tried *Spaces* on your OSX 10.6 Mac?
Personally I found *Spaces* very useful on SL and even though the
implementation is slightly different with Mavericks & Yosemite, It is a
valuable tool which helps clean up much screen clutter with open
application windows, giving me multiple desktops.

On this Mac (OSX 10.10.1) I have 4 active *Spaces*, and the ability to
add more as needed.
I have a photo editing space in which I have Photoshop and Lightroom
running. Another space is used for internet, another for
communications, email, etc., and one for other stuff such as Usenet.

Things look something like this:

Very few people in the real world know things like Spaces, Mission
Control, etc. are even there*, let alone have any actual need for it.
Most people have *EXTREMELY* simply needs.

* Except when they accidently click on a Dock icon, press a keyboard
shortcut, or something and then wonder "What is this? How do I get out
of it?"

With OS/2 I was a heavy user of the Spaces equivalent (I forget what
it was called in OS/2). When the time came that I decided I had to
abandon OS/2 and move on, I was reluctant to move to Mac because
10.4 didn't have a Spaces capability. However, when I learned that I
could have a second monitor attached to an iMac I decided to go
ahead and found that with two monitors I could get along quite well
without Spaces. Now I have a 27" iMac and a 19" aux monitor; with
all that display real estate I don't find any need for Spaces and
have never bothered to learn how to invoke it.
