#67892 — Spontaneous reboot and freeze

FromSavageduck <savageduck1@{REMOVESPAM}me.com>

SubjectSpontaneous reboot and freeze
Message-ID<2014122713335125228-savageduck1@REMOVESPAMmecom>
This morning I have been baffled by four spontaneous reboots (nothing
that I initiated). The display goes blank and I get the start up chime.
Then I get a blank, white screen. No , no login window, no cursor,
nada!.
I have to go to the power button and recycle: turn power off and power
up. That restarts the Mac very, unusually slowly.

I am running OSX 10.10.1 on a 3.6 GHz i5, with 16 GB RAM.

Here is the latest crash report in full, I have not been able to get
anything meaningful from that. Perhaps it might be of some interest and
meaningful to those here, and if any solutions are forthcoming they
will be more than welcome:

That's a kernel panic. I see you have kernel extensions from Pogoplug
and Microsoft installed. Could be one of those is causing the panic.

What messages do you see in /var/log/system/log with a time stamp of
13:06:10 (or just earlier than that)?

The MS extension is the MS Trackman Optical control panel & driver.
Basically a mouse controller. I have never experienced an issue with
that and I am using it right now.
The Pogoplug extension Is for one of my Pogoplug cloud servers. I have
never had an issue with that, but for now I have disabled it.

I meant the /var/log/system.log file (with time stamps matching or close
to 13:06:10).

And nospam is correct that the problem may be hardware-related. It's a
good idea to run Apple Hardware Test.

I did. I initiated the fresh reboot at 13:05:37, and checked events
prior to that.

That is another problem. I have shut down as per directions and then
restarted while holding down the "D" key, and the
"Hardware/Diagnostics" test does not start up. after a lengthy wait,
without having lifted my finger from the "D" key the log=in window
opens. I have tried this 4 or 5 times and I have not been able to make
that hardware test.

often, kernel panics are hardware related.

run the apple hardware diagnostic or take it to an apple store and have
them run theirs (which can do more).

I have shut down as per directions and then restarted while holding
down the "D" key, and the "Hardware/Diagnostics" test does not start
up. after a lengthy wait, without having lifted my finger from the "D"
key the log=in window opens. I have tried this 4 or 5 times and I have
not been able to make that hardware test.

I have used the disc utility and my startup disc passes muster.

I have disabled my Pogoplug setup, That has some storage on their
server and a 1 TB HDD on my local PP server via my Pogoplug device. It
looked like there might be some issues there. In the meantime, I
haven't had another crash in about 7 hours.

Have you tried starting from some other disk, an external one for
example, or used another dummy account (that has almost nothing but
what came with the Apple OS).

Did you follow these instructions?:

Before starting AHT, be sure to disconnect all external devices except
the keyboard, mouse, display, and Ethernet adapter. Also disconnect any
external optical drives.

Do you have a recovery partition installed on this computer? You can
tell quickly by entering the following command in a terminal window:

diskutil list

If you see "Apple_Boot Recovery HD" listed under the /dev/disk0 entry,
then you do have a recovery partition on the startup drive.

> I have used the disc utility and my startup disc passes muster.

Did you specifically run the "Verify Disk" function (not the "Verify
Disk Permissions" function)? What is the verbatim output?

[snip]

No, that's the help page for diskutil. You must have entered the command
wrong or something. The command is (without quotes): "diskutil list".
The correct output will look similar to this:

# diskutil list
/dev/disk0
   #: TYPE NAME SIZE
IDENTIFIER
   0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1 GB
disk0
   1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB
disk0s1
   2: Apple_CoreStorage 499.2 GB
disk0s2
   3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB
disk0s3
/dev/disk1
   #: TYPE NAME SIZE
IDENTIFIER
   0: Apple_HFS System *498.9 GB
disk1
                                 Logical Volume on disk0s2
                                 71DB8E55-D40A-40C1-9E1D-05BE4C39886F
                                 Unencrypted

Another way to tell if you have a recovery partition is to use Disk
Utility:

1. Quit Disk Utility.
2. In a terminal window, enter this command to enable the Disk Utility
"Debug" menu (also: see TIP below):
	defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
3. Run Disk Utility.
4. From the menu bar, choose Debug > Show Every Partition.
5. Look at the left side of the window for "Recovery HD":

<http://jollyroger.kicks-ass.org/disk_utility/recovery_hd.png>

TIP: If you install the Secrets preference panel, you can enable the
Disk Utility Debug menu (and a whole slew of other hidden settings,
including "Show Hidden Partitions") without messing with a terminal
window:

<http://jollyroger.kicks-ass.org/disk_utility/debug_mode_secrets.png>

You can get the Secrets preference panel here (look for the "PrefPane"
link near the top): <http://secrets.blacktree.com>

To use it, just extract the ZIP archive, double-click the prefpane file
to install it, and it will appear in the System Preferences window.

was that not you who told us the nice story about an iMac falling down

Sadly, yes.

We shall see. I have been trying several stop gap tricks to get through
the weekend. So far unhooking my Pogoplug connection has proven
fruitful in that I have not had another crash since making my pitiful
initial report.

Oh yeah! That was him, huh?

Yep. That's a failing hard drive. It's possible during the fall the
head crashed.

Savageduck, have you run Disk Utility > Verify Disk? What does it
report? Is the data on this drive backed up with Time Machine?

I haven't been able to pin the blame down to that specifically.
It has been up and running without issue since that disaster, even
before I replaced the glass.

The events yesterday were the first of this type of problem I have had
with any Mac since 1992.

Anyway, since yesterday afternoon I have been up and running without
another crash. The only significant thing I have done was to disconnect
and disable my various Pogoplug extensions & server, as it was
suggested that the problem might lie there.

I don't believe that I am in anyway out of the woods here and I am
fearfully anticipating a truly fatal crash before I can get to the root
of the problem and fix it.

As the condemned mounting the gallows said with each step; "So far, so good."

Sure, but there could be a loose connector (due to the floor rising up
and hitting the Mac) in there that is occasionally intermittent.

If it occurs again ...

If you have the torx drivers (smallish ones), open it up (carefully -
there are thin wires in the bezel area - disconnect the camera and light
connection early in the process). Remove the display (carefully - two
connectors IIRC on my old iMac (late 2007 v.)) and then just make sure
all the other connectors are in place and look around for anything that
doesn't look right.

(Sequences for your particular iMac at iFixit).

Just a single bad connection in there that is in contact but that could
change due to heat, cool or vibration could be enough to cause your issue.

Did you re-enable them to isolate?

Nah. It's a Mac!

What the condemned mounting the gallows can't do -- that you can -- is
create a backup. You don't seem to have mentioned whether you have a
backup, say via Time Machine or SuperDuper. If there is a disk
problem, a backup would be very important -- well, it's always
important, since a disk problem is bound to develop eventually.

Do you have an ongoing Time Machine backup?

Martin
