For about 20 seconds the cursor disappeared on my iMac screen. It would
show on the side screen.

After going back and forth a half dozen times it suddenly reappeared ...

Applications in Mac OS have the ability to change and obscure the
cursor, and may do so erroneously.

I've never seen this before.

Caveat - when launching WinXP in Fusion, the cursor disappears until
WinXP gets to the point of setting up a cursor, but CMD-Tab to any other
app restores it.

At the time, today, it happened I was in Thunderbird.

I've seen it plenty - even in classic Mac OS. How long have you been
using Macs?

Happened again while in Thunderbird. This never happened before and TB
has not been updated in a long time.

Pointing to another app (on side screen) and clicking fixes it.

What do you mean by "side screen"? I have a 42" LED TV attached to a
MacBook Pro running SL as a media center. The cursor frequently
disappears from both screens. It seems to go off into the ether on the
sides of the two screens as if they were much larger then they actually
are. Moving around the track pad in random directions will eventually
bring it back on to one of the two screens. Mostly I see this with the
Finder and VLC because they are the apps I run most frequently. I have
the TV arranged above the the Macbook Pro and the appropriate
configuration set up in the Monitors Preference Pane.

I have only seen this behavior when a second screen is attached.

Say I'm working on my main screen (iMac,27") and suddenly, on that
screen, no matter where I point (various apps), the cursor is invisible.

If I move towards the side screen (mail, messages, calendars, etc.) then
the cursor appears and when I come back to the main screen the cursor is
normal again.

I don't recall this happening in the past - at least not as
persistently. (Within one app sure, but move the focus off of that app
to another and it's solved. Now it's related to screen space).

Yeah, my problem seems to be related to running an external TV screen.
I have another MBP running the same OS and apps and don't recall ever
seeing the problem. Maybe you could write an Applescript to invoke the
Accessibility cursor controls and change the size or something. Then
you could assign the script to a hotkey. I'm surprised someone hasn't
developed a "find cursor" app.

That's just another one of the damned bugs in OS X that Apple has
refused to acknowledge or fix for several years now. The solution is
easy enough - whizz your mouse "up" a bunch and click - any click on
the menu bar will bring your mouse cursor back into this dimension
again.

Good luck.
