SubjectToday's Hardware Catastrophe
Message-ID<2014121620440068002-savageduck1@REMOVESPAMmecom>
This morning my work table was upended when I snagged a foot and fell
into it. My iMac went off the back and the glass screen shattered.
That was the bad news. The good news is, iFixit had a replacement in
their inventory, and since they are located 40 miles from me in San
Luis Obispo it should reach me some time Wednesday.
The cost $149.99 + tax + shipping.

The crime scene shot of the deceased.

The actual LCD and all the logic behind it was intact ? Only front glass
broken ? Pretty lucky guy (in your badluck !)

The hard drive could be damaged as well, plus various little plugs
inside may have come loose or disconnected.

That was a concern, so I have been running it all day, and all seems to
be functioning as it should. It hadn't even lost the Wi-Fi network
connection as it lay on the floor. needless to say I had to take a few
deep breaths and immediately got online to iFixit, while peering
through shattered glass. Not an experience I care to repeat.
I then removed the broken glass, and have had no detectable issues. I
expect that by this time tomorrow the fresh glass will be in place.

I was most fortunate in all other respects.

The optimistic survivor with a quick iPhone snapshot. The smudge in the
upper right is a dangling iPhone finger.

All things considered, $200 or so is a damn good outcome.

Still, I'd be horrified.

I'm shopping iPhone 4S replacement batteries and checked the Reseller
Ratings for iFixit. A lot of their negative reviews seem to have a
common theme-- describing a sometimes careless and unresponsive
company...and not very customer-minded. I decided against buying from them.

Report back on how your purchase goes!

I have never had an issue with iFixit. My first dealing with them was
in 2009 when they found a new logic board for my father's G4 PowerBook
Pro 15" when no other vendor could help.

So far this transaction has been very smooth. I placed the order online
yesterday at about 3:50 AM and received an immediate confirmation email.
At 16:14 I got a shipping confirmation email with UPS tracking number.
I checked with UPS and delivery is on track and scheduled for after
noon today.

Since for me iFixit is pretty much local, about 40 miles South in San
Luis Obispo, I figured that if they had the screen in inventory, they
should be able to get it to me within a day. I live about 13 miles
west of Paso Robles and I just didn't feel like taking that drive. I
had other stuff to do.

Glad to see you've gotten taken care of. If it were me and they were
that close, I would have been seriously tempted to take a scenic tour
and just happen to stop at their shop! :)

With yesterday's stormy weather, and a rock slide on the Cuesta Grade
causing a 5 hour delay on Hwy 101, that scenic tour would not have been
that pleasant.

Hmm, everything west of the Central Valley is made of mud, isn't it?

younger than those on the East Coast.
