Riddle me this - who is talking about quitting?
Addicts (I know, I work with more than few) rationalize by saying,
"It makes my life better (than it would be without it)."
Christopher Hitchens and tobacco is the classic example. He died
from cancer, but he was unwavering in his point of view to the end.

Nope. I've taken offense, because I tried to point out to you that the
thing you claimed you'd have to give up...
("With a single click, I can literally navigate to any folder or file

Different, maybe... but better? What's better than something that does EXACTLY what you want it to do? Better-er, I guess. Actually, I use one of them every day. Dragthing. Dragthing is extremely customizable, and runs rings around the dock. It puts a series of pop-up drawers wherever I want them - in my case, along the bottom and left side of the screen. I have no need for the dock. How many times, and in how many ways can I say that one sentence? I hardly ever use the dock, but it does provide many things that I do need and use (the app is rather more than just a row of icons). I am not singing the praises of the dock, I am saying there are many other choices that do not rely on replicating System 7. Launchbar, for example, let's me do just about anything on my computer without reaching for the mouse. > And tell me, if you had a product that could make you feel 10 years > younger, and grow your hair back, you wouldn't use it because it would > be replicating your long-abandoned features? This is getting existential. You seem to think that I'm looking for a way to co-exist with the dock. I appreciate the advice... but, no matter where the dock is placed, I'm not going to use it. The issue isn't that it takes up space. The issue is that it prevents me from working like I want to. If it's at the bottom of my screen, when I go to open a drawer which are also located at the bottom of the screen - both the drawer and the dock pop-up together. You can't get to the items in the drawer because the dock obscures them. Left side... same thing. Right side... sometimes same thing. Sure, I could also push my dresser in between the couch and the TV - and just move the dresser when I wanted to watch a show... but why would I want to do that? It's a nice dresser. It's useful. It stores my clothes neatly... but it doesn't belong in between me and something I want to use. That's the dock. I used to have an application that shrunk the dock down to 2 pixels in size, and that worked pretty well. You had to hit those 2 pixels exactly in order to trigger the dock. I've forgotten what it was... Dragthing makes my life easier. Classic Menu makes my life easier. The dock doesn't. There's nothing I need it for, and in order to use it, I'd have to give up something that does exactly what I want it to do, the way I want it to be done. I wonder if people would like ClassicMenu if it wasn't named that? If it had a shiny new icon, and it's own Facebook page and Twitter account. Maybe a video on YouTube with a 20 something wearing a vest, skinny jeans, and a porkpie hat? Then it might even be be "trending" someday. :-) -- Computers are like Old Testaments Gods. Ummm... I said "If you're going to use it, it has to take up some space." Then it was stated "Only when you're using it; at all other times, it doesn't take up any space at all." Where is either of those statements inaccurate, or contradictory? Both of those statements are saying the same thing. I even said "The issue isn't that it takes up space. The issue is that it prevents me from working like I want to." I said that it takes up real estate, and that it's in my way... and I explained why. But I don't recall ever saying that it took up space when it wasn't in use. Christ, this place is getting weird in it's old age. You want to talk about correcting inaccuracies? Let me correct a few. I mentioned that I thought it odd that the OS wouldn't let you delete apps like Chess. My exact words were "Do you know that you can't even get rid of useless apps like "Chess"?" That's all I said. No judgement, outside of my saying chess is useless. Well, it's a game... of course it's useless. Enjoyable, challenging maybe, but pretty useless in that it doesn't do anything. In an instant, that became: "No shit. The things that get people's panties twisted amaze me > sometimes. If I let little stupid things like this get me upset, I'd > probably get nothing productive done with my computers. Lucky me. : )" My, God... but where were my panties in a twist? In the very next post, I got "Oh, no! Approximately 7MB on my 500GB drive I can't get back! How ever will I live?" Did anybody see me say anything about worrying about 7MB? No, because I never said it... but I got ragged on for it. I have 6 Terabytes internal storage, and a docking station that lets me use 12 old HD's as external storage. That's another 5 terabytes of external storage. Why would I be complaining about a few megs of storage? Someone else tells me: "Frankly, there are soooo many better options that resurrecting the Apple >> menu that I am really surprised anyone is still putting forth effort on >> resurrecting a bit of System 7." Then: "No, I said it to a guy who refuses to let go of the ancient Apple > menu paradigm when other (some better) options exist. ; ) Nice try, > though." But they NEVER tell me what those soooo many better options are, do they? System 7? What, wasn't the Apple menu just around in OS9? Talk about inaccuracies. > Since it is an app that replicates a long-abandoned feature of the OS. > There are many ways, and nearly all of them better, to replicate (and far > exceed) the capabilities of the old Apple Menu. So, I keep asking... what the fuck are all these amazing apps that are so much better than what I'm using? Cause people keep telling me that they exist, but apparently it's a State Secret as to what they are. Am I the only one not in the club? Do I need to figure out a secret handshake or something? So, if you want to talk about correcting inaccuracies... I've got bushel baskets full of crap that's being attributed to me that simply did not happen. And it KEEPS happening. I'm "clinging" to old technology. I'm "living in the past". I kidnapped the Lindbergh baby... (don't worry, I'm sure that's coming.) My eyes must be "getting old" because I say the new system font is harder to read - even after I posted an assessment of exactly WHY it's harder to read by a typography expert, professor and author who says "It's definitely harder to read," and "Helvetica Neue doesn't have the legibility that Lucida Grande has." I got: "The key difference is I am not complaining that things have changed, while you are. ; )" I post a color illusion, and I get: "And in back in real life, that particular illustration of that illusion >>> is WRONG. A and B are NOT exactly the same colour" Even AFTER I post the proof from an MIT professor! M-I-fucking-T isn't good enough for some people. (Not you... but you-know-who.) But, yup, I'm a complainer, all right. What did I complain about? I made a few observations, and backed up my statements with sources, quotes and detailed explanations supporting those assessments... but that just isn't good enough. In return, I get a one or two sentence reply that's unhelpful, unsupported and is in reaction to something I never said. I'm not directing any this vitriol towards you, Michelle. (Lord knows you get enough of that already, without me adding to it.) But I've gotta ask... Is there anything I've said here that's inaccurate? If anything, I hate inaccuracies more than you do, mostly because I'm a recent victim of them. I no sooner open my mouth, and I'm at the bottom of a pig-pile. -- "Listen, I'm a politician... which means that I'm a cheat and a liar, and when I'm not kissing babies, I'm stealing their lollipops." -Hunt for Red October
