I don't know if any of these still work in Yosemite, but some possible
suggestions which might help for a non-Retina display ...
A. You could try changing the Font Smoothing options in the
System Preferences (it's in the Appearance panel in OS X 10.5).
B. Try using HiDPI mode ... it may not work on an external
display and it does reduce the screens apparent resolution
(a 21.5" iMac display will go down to 960x540. To enable
HiDPI mode ...
1. In Terminal as a single line (without the quotes):
"sudo defaults write
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
DisplayResolutionEnabled -bool true"
2. Authorise it with your administrator password.
3. Quit Terminal, and thenlogout (remember to save any work
in other apps), and login again.
4. Open System Preferences and go to Display. Click the radio
button next to "Scaled" and choose the new HiDPI resolution
from the list - it is half the screen's native resolution.
5. To revert to normal use the same Terminal command with
"true" changed to "NO;"
C. As someone else said, TinkerTool allows you to easily change
some of the "hidden" system settings, including the system font.
D. For OS X 10.9 there is an app called Flavours which lets you
tweak and "skin" the Mac OS. There's some themes on the website,
or you can make you own. http://flavours.interacto.net

People are far less likely to upgrade hardware if they are forced onto a version of OS-X which they refused to install onto the existing hardware because they dislike the changes. I know a number of people who installed upgrades becayse they were free and disliked the changes. I didn't install because I tried to find out what the changes were before installing.

Yep, for most apps it is definitely not a real value. A good example of bad UI design. One wonders of the people implimenting
this sort of stuff have the same problem, and if they don't, why not.

Resizing the icon should fix this. Graphic Converter is one tool that
can do it.

It's a good time to experiment with other OSes. Apple has its ups and downs and right now seems pretty much like rock bottom. I've been experimenting with different versions on a laptop. 10.6 : Fast and efficient but not supported by Apple 10.7 : 100% pure disaster 10.8 : Stable but performs poorly 10.9 : Pure disaster again. Constantly hitting severe bugs. 100 times slower than 10.6 running large apps (20 - 80 GB datasets). Locks up dead with several large processes running. On now is Ubuntu 12.04. The GUI is glitchy and it eats power like a portable heater. I've only done minor performance testing but so far it seems to be at least in 10.6 territory. I will jump to 14.04 to see if power consumption drops.
