Got my daughter an MBP for college. She started putting photos and stuff
on it before I had a chance to bring her files over from her old MacBook
with Migration Assistant. If I use MI now, will it overwrite anything
already on the MBP?

Is she using Time Machine? If so, you'd have a fairly easy way to
restore anything that went missing during migration.

Not if you migrate the old data to a new user account, but then she'll
have two user accounts and have to manually move files from one to the
other ... which may not be a real problem since most people collect
piles of garbage they never look at again anyway.

you can migrate afterwards, but it will create a new account and you're
likely to have permissions headaches.

I'd just make sure that the user accounts on the new and old machines
aren't the same and that all the file she's added are IN her new
acccount's home folder. Migration assistant will then create a second
account on the new machine and she can consolidate from there.
