#61674 — Old Mac, New Speed

FromDavoud <star@sky.net>

SubjectOld Mac, New Speed
Message-ID<010720142322387235%star@sky.net>
Holy hard drive, Batman!

The 500GB HD on this "17-inch, Early 2008" MB Pro failed two weeks ago.
This machine, one of two 17-inch MBPs that I own, is important to me.

I ran it from the SuperDuper external backup drive for a bit while I
decided what to do. I decided to buy a Crucial 960GB SSD from Amazon.

I did that this evening, then cloned the SuperDuper backup to the new
SSD. I was expecting a little speed bump on this 6-year-old machine, as
I am accustomed to the speed of my 15" MBP Retina SSD, but this far
exceeds my expectations. Aperture, Lightroom, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro,
and astronomy software with huge databases, all load in a flash and run
much faster than I would have dared hope.

Bottom line, at $400-and-something this is a great choice if you're
looking to give new life to an old Mac that is irreplaceable.

I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that
you will say in your entire life.

Well, yes, upgrading from a traditional spindle hard drive to a solid
state drive will dramatically increase the general speed of any
computer.

You two rocket scientists might also want to tell us that water is wet,

I don't know. [gets slimed] I never had a real sex before. I am pretty
sure others had experiences to tell us that. ;)

Was it really worth your time to write that? Is it worth my time to
write this?

Well yeah, I think it was. It's tedious reading so many of the fan-boy
posts here. They self-servingly affirm the obvious in a tone that ought
to be reserved for treatises by Newton, Einstein, or Moses coming down
off the mountain...

Why do you read the posts, then?

Many of the posts here are from knowledgeable, helpful folks and are
on-point for issues I have questions about. As a relative Mac newbie, I
learn a lot from them.

But the fan-boi and girl droids who feign insider status usually just
regurgitate stuff (sometimes inaccurately) the rumor blogs and real
insider websites have already published hours previous.

For many of these folks, their reach sadly exceeds their grasp-- and
they are the tedious ones I was referring to. Not to mention the
knee-jerk Defenders of the Faith who rail or take umbrage at any
question or statement someone posts that reflects an opinion contrary to
the orthodoxy.

So, once more, if that's your opinion, why do you read the posts?

Oh, probably for the same reason people gawk at a gruesome bloody
traffic accident or shell out a few bucks for a ticket to go onto the
freak show tent at a carnival ;-)

In which case if as a consequence of gawping you run into the geezer in
front, don't complain.

If you were honest about it, you would say that it's because you're a
troll.

Nope; I know I'm not, and I don't want to be.

Good point; we can safely realize that you're not here for malicious
reasons. Thanks for clearing that up

I've been a Mac user since 1987 and an Apple // user before
that.

Most of the time, I quickly skim through the posts in this
forum (and in the other Mac-oriented usenet groups).

There's very little of interest posted here...
