There's more than one reason not to own one. They don't work in my house
any more than my iPad can reach my wifi from the yard: reinforced concrete
walls and roof 8-). A cheap stupid cell phone in my car for emergenciy use
suffices when I'm away from my landline.

No I didn't. I said I have a cheap PAYG mobile that costs me £15/year.
Why should I spend £30/month or whatever a contract would cost, to no
particular benefit. If you do that, then hey fella, I got a nice
portfolio of bridges.

You don’t have to have a contract, or pay anything like that per month
either.

There are lots of benefits over a stupidphone.

For the convenience of getting turn by turn navigation right to the door.

> I have a cheap PAYG mobile that I doubt I put more than fifteen quid on

It costs me quite literally just 5c per navigation.
Peanuts compared with the cost of the petrol alone.

And very handy indeed when you turn up at the place
where it was supposed to be and find that its moved
and that the move hasn’t made it from google to
maps.google or the apple mapper yet.

By and large that's called SWMBO navigating while I drive. Or vice
versa. She's a very good navigator.

We've been considering a SatNav (or iphone + satnav software) for 10
years. We're still considering it. The only time it'll beat what we
actually do is if we need to find a specific spot in a strange town
(i.e. somewhere we'd not planned to go ahead of time) and whatever maps
we have are insufficient. But that's rare enough that we've never got
around to getting one. OS maps usually do the business anyway.

But isnt always available to do that and even a
very good navigator can't do anything about a place
that has moved with the map not being updated yet.

And have missed out on the convenience of it
because you haven't done what makes sense.

Or when you show up at a place that has moved and
find that it has moved and hasn’t left adequate info
on where it has moved to. I just had that on Monday.

But if you had got a decent smartphone
you would have had things more convenient
for quite a while now.

Much more convenient to use a smartphone
mapper which can use the operation's name
etc or just show you the nearest place where
you can do some particular thing.

Yep.

I use it when I specify the destination for turn by turn navigation.

On the garage/yard sale run I normally do that just before leaving
a garage/yard sale for the next one before driving off.

I did it a couple of days ago too when I went to where I thought
a closing down sale was, discovered that it wasn’t where I thought
it was, got maps.google to tell me where it was, got it to show me
the street view of where it claimed it was, saw that it clearly was
not where it claimed it should be, because I could see that it was
supposed to be next to the pub and I could see that it wasn’t.
So it must have moved and the database had not been updated.
Got google to tell me where it was, and that's where it actually was.

I can see enough of the buildings and parking lots with satellite view
for my purposes. : ) No street view needed. I'll stay with Apple Maps. I
do have Google Maps and others installed, but rarely use them, since
Apple Maps does all I need.

The tops of, yes. But you aint gonna see what the building actually
looks like from satellite view. Or the environs.

Not needed. As I said, I can see enough of the buildings and parking

this discussion prompted me to use street view to look at the homes I
