Application gets a "paste event". Application chooses how to handle it.
Consider a clipboard that contains an image and you try to paste it
into an editor that is currently in text-only mode. The OS doesn't know
about it, the application knows if it can accept the paste event or not.

Paste a .EPS clipboard into a text editor and you will see the
postscript code (text). Paste it into Photoshop and photoshop will
render the .EPS into an image.

Applications are very involved in accepting paste events (even if a
toolkit/API makes it easy to implement).

Since I'm talking about pasting text to a an input that takes text, I'm
not sure why you bring up this irrelevancy. Even if one pasted an image
to the password input, and even if the image data got pasted, I don't
think that would harm anything (it could / would be rejected).

Indeed, you can paste the name and secret of a WEP2 WiFi device into
those windows w/o issue, why not sys password dialogs?

Pasting an image as a PW could be clever obfuscation as well. Paste an
image into password, it accepts that stream as a password (encrypts it,
etc.) and then it is the valid as a password in the future.... people
could bang away for a very long w/o knowing the PW is really a very long
string that is really the binary of some image ...

I've tried following this thread and a lot of it is beyond me, but I
wanted to answer your question, because, Yes, it started happening
maybe a month or two ago.

In my case (unlike some of the possibilities posited below in the
thread) it happens without me launching anything new or doing anything
that would cause it to happen: I'm typing, say, in an email (Mail.app)
and the focus jumps somewhere else. It's not just Mail.app, either.
Could be TextEdit or any app, it seems. I haven't hit a modifier key
either, or accidentally tapped the touchpad with the cursor outside the
active window.

One time I happened to notice the google drive icon in the menu bar had
just turned gray and then reverted to black when it happened: a
disconnect and reconnect, maybe, although I don't know why that
occurred. I thought that might be the culprit so I disabled google
drive for a while, but the jump still happened.

Anyway, FWIW, that's my story.

How many folks experiencing this problem are running Google software?

Just a thought...

I have seen Google Drive mentioned in the context of Spaces switching
from a space to another space. I am running GDrive and also the script
that Martin provided. Maybe I'll trap what's going on....

Finally trapped the offender using the script that Martin supplied.

1. yesterday from Thunderbird: Google Drive

2. yesterday from QuickTime: Google Drive.

Since I don't use GD much I'm kicking it out.

That confirms my suspicion as well. After disabling it and not letting
it reinitialize after a restart (which is apparently what happened
before) I've had no problems with lost focus. Bye, GD Google Drive.

That can't be right: nospam said this is a longstanding bug in OS X; and
we all know he is never wrong about anything.

It *IS* a long-standing bug in Mac OS X, it doesn't co-operate very
well with GD.
 See, he is still right.

This is actually not contradictory. It is a design flaw of OS-X to allow
one application to steal focus, a flaw that Google abuses.

Whether or not it is a design flaw is up for debate, and the fact
remains that so far there has been zero evidence given to back the
assertion that this is a longstanding bug in OS X that Apple considers
working as designed.

focus stealing can still occur whether or not not google drive is there.

it can happen with a variety of apps, commonly safari and itunes, but
also many others.

it is *not* just google drive nor is it caused by google drive and
removing google drive will not eliminate the problem because it's in
the system itself.

it is without question, a bug in os x and it did not exist in mac os 9
and earlier.

Not a bug. Like translucency, it is an undesirable design problem.

it's a bug because because focus stealing is unexpected and can
potentially result in data loss.

translucency is something that can be toggled on or off. it is never
unexpected nor will it result in data loss. although it may be ugly and
dumb, it's not a bug.

they're very different.

Certainly not. It may be a difference in design between OS 9 and OS X,
but that does not magically make it a bug - no matter how many times you
repeat the lie. In all likelihood, Apple made a conscious decision
regarding this difference in design, and problem with good reasons.
Whether it is a good design decision is another discussion, and can be
debated; but your claim that this is a longstanding bug in OS X is still
absent of a shred of evidence.

where's your evidence that it *isn't* a bug? under what circumstances
can focus stealing be justified??

once again, the very definition of a software bug perfectly describes
focus stealing:

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_bug>
A software bug is an error, flaw, failure, or fault in a computer
program or system that causes it to produce an incorrect or
unexpected result, or to behave in unintended ways.

worst case, it can cause data loss and under no circumstances is data
loss ever acceptable.

it's without question, a bug.

Since you made the claim that it is a bug, the burden of proof rests on
your shoulders.

Correct. And, citing Wikipedia isn't going to cut it, either.

The "proof" is most likely somewhere in here...

Window Programming Guide: Introduction

it does, because that explains what a software bug *is* and focus
stealing fits the definition perfectly. therefore, it's a bug.

nobody has yet given any reason why it would ever be desirable, which
of course, they can't, since there is a risk of data loss and that is
*never* desirable under any circumstances.

Users expect to see their actions on the keyboard and mouse take
effect not only in a particular application, but also in a particular
window of that application. Each user action is associated with a
window by the window server and AppKit. Before acting, the user needs
to know which window will be affected; there should be no surprises.

note the last sentence: 'Before acting, the user needs to know which
window will be affected; there should be no surprises.'

since focus stealing is by definition a surprise and users won't know
which window will be affected, then it is a bug.

continuing on,
To mark the key window for users, AppKit highlights its title bar.
You can think of the highlighting as a kind of pointer for the
keyboard. It shifts from window to window as the key window changes.
Key-window status also moves from application to application as the
active application changes. Only one window on the screen is marked
at a time, and it is in the active application. There¹s just one key
window on the Desktop. Even a system that has two screens, but only
one keyboard, has at most one key window.

since focus stealing can steal focus *without* altering the title bar,
it's a bug by that description too.
