SubjectFileVault 2 and Trash
Message-ID<c00e7lF4b9oU1@mid.individual.net>
If I have FileVault 2 enabled, are items in the [emptied] trash still
secure or should I secure delete them to be sure they can't be
recovered?

The entire disk is encrypted.

There are no little unencrypted areas.

That's what I thought but I had no reference to support the position.

If someone had the key to the disk and a recovery program, then it could
potentially be recovered by simply mounting the disk using that key.
(password).

If in doubt use secure empty trash from the Finder menu or move them to
a temp folder and: "srm -sr *" from terminal. This is a bit faster than
Sec empty trash as -s is a single pass and that's more than sufficient
with high density disks or SSD's.
