While TB may not be the perfect usenet client it is compiled for OS X and therefore a Mac app. Believe it or not a lot of apps run on a lot of platforms. So they may not conform to the particular target in all ways - OTOH, they don't conform to any specific target in any way. AFAIK TB is available for OS X, Windows and Linux (possibly other Unix'). When you pause to think (recommended) that is how apps _should_ be written so that they can be deployed on more platforms and thereby reduce s/w development and maintenance cost. A very good example is Photoshop. It is almost identical in every function and UI on OS X and Windows. (Yes, it is well funded too). It's original design may not have been that way - but they turned the ship quickly enough. -- I was born a 1%er - I'm just more equal than the rest.

For your reference, records indicate that Alan Browne <alan.browne@FreelunchVideotron.ca> wrote: > While TB may not be the perfect usenet client it is compiled for OS X > and therefore a Mac app. Your bar is set too low. Eclipse is not a Mac app, as I loathe to experience every time I have to do Java/Android development. Nor is Audacity, or tons of other software that come to the Mac in the form of ports. It’s nice that we can run it, when there is nothing else to get the job done, but nobody who buys a Mac for the Mac experience does so because they think Mac apps and ports are the same thing. That is the heart of why your argument is so obviously flawed that, for you to make it, is intellectually dishonest. > When you pause to think (recommended) that is how apps _should_ be > written so that they can be deployed on more platforms and thereby > reduce s/w development and maintenance cost. Only bean counters think that way. Every professional software developer I know puts the *user’s* benefit before their own. If I have to maintain a separate code base for Android and iOS because that results in the best user experience, that’s what I do. Mac developers and users, having been underdogs for so long, understand this. It is a rookie mistake to value the developer’s time more than the user’s time, because the number of users for most software dwarfs the number of developers. -- dn ƃuᴉʞool ǝɹɐ sƃuᴉɥʇ

Love that blog - been following it for years :-D I loath Abobe simply because of their Flash bullshit (googling about that is how I found this blog), but when I see the posts about the UI issues with their professional apps, I shudder (as well as laugh a whole lot, and thank my stars I've never needed more than GraphicConverter). -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

I wasn't sure what the situation was there regarding weed. Quebec is probably the most tolerant province - BC might be moreso. Quebec also has its own provincial police force where most other provinces (not all) rely on the RCMP who respond more to the desires of the federal government - currently led by George Bush Jr. (aka Stephen Harper). Ontario has its own police - but apparently are stiff on pot. Quebec governments are socially liberal (no matter who gets in) and cracking down on pot is really not a concern unless it is criminal gang related (Hells Angels, Unorganized Crime (the Italian mob), the Irish mob, etc.). And that's not so much about the pot as the surrounding business policies and practices. The police here (provincial or municipal stopped wasting resources on petty possession a long time ago. They don't bust low level sellers (unless its an included offense for something else) - they prefer to go after the organizations. Fewer, bigger busts. All past evidence shows that people will, in fact, *not* pay for newsreaders. At least not in the numbers that make a full-blown development effort worth the risk. The also sell access to what is now call Highwinds news service for
US$9 a month. The network serving it is pretty good (very fast), too.

I am currently using slrn since MT-NW died. slrn is great, but I miss a lot of things in MT-NW. We're not discussing my needs of a good news reader, but rather whether or not I would pay someone money today on things they promise to deliver on tuesday. It's the chicken and the egg - you won't develop without some money first, and some people don't want to give you money unless they see a more or less finnished version of the product. That's just... life :) -- Sandman[.net]

Windows was, and almost certainly still is, a much larger market than the Mac. iOS is a different story, but people also expect to pay less for apps there, and generally still expect to pay nothing at all for yet another social networking service. It’s not just a question *that* people are willing to pay, but that they’re willing to pay *enough* to justify the development costs. That’s why people saying they “might” be willing to part with $20 after 1000 hours get sunk into an app just isn’t going to motivate any sane developers. > > I do the same, but I also run a business that sees value in what *other* > > people need and use and want. Right now, I’m trying to see if they really > > want a new newsreader. Some do, some like you don’t, and some people appear > > to have gone off the deep end. > > Huh? I very much want a new newsreader. No, you don’t. You say you do, but when push comes to shove you seem unwilling to offer up even $10 to demonstrate how “very much” you want it. Other people have not only demonstrated otherwise, but have done so with the understanding that starting from square one means that Signal would not come out of the door fully functional on day one. I can’t explain why people like you refuse to acknowledge the ample evidence that is on display. > and some people don't want to give you money unless they see a more or less > finnished version of the product.
