If you command-click the Spotlight entry, it will open the enclosing
folder.

But I'm sure you knew that...

And the full file path is available in the bottom of the Finder window,
with each individual sub-folder being clickable.

Or right / Command clicking on the name of an open document will pop-up
a menu of the file path in many applications.

I'm wondering why ⌘-R doesn't work for JR.

I suspect LaunchBar is intercepting the keys. I haven't taken the time to
verify it though since it's not a feature I would use much anyway, and
Command-select does the same thing.

Well this is interesting. I just tried it again on my laptop after
shutting it down last night, and now it works. I'll have to try it again
on my Mac Pro, which hasn't been restarted in months. I bet it's still
not working there. Gotta be a bug somewhere...

Reminds me of my inability to search for a string in Preview. And then

Probably an Apple bug - just like "Open With" occasionally still
(since 10.3) does not produce a list of applications from which to
choose.

Spotlight already offers that. Put "filename:" in front of the filename
you want in the Spotlight search field, and you will get filenames with
elements that begin with the specified text.

You can get even more control if you know the advanced syntax, or via a
Finder search window, by adding search rules such as "Filename matches".

So do that then.

Show All in Finder, then you can right click and choose Open With.

It would be fair to assume that in 10.10, any new search categories will
be added to the existing list in System Preferences > Spotlight, so you
will be able to disable any categories you never want to search.

If you only sometimes want the useless drivel then that might be
trickier to deal with.

> Having s mall buttons in the spotlight input field might be able to

The search field in Finder already has that in 10.7 and later via a
dynamically updated pop-down menu, e.g. to let you specify that you want
to only search the name property.

Judging from what I've seen in/about the keynote so far, the content
area of an active window won't be translucent, just areas like the title
bar, sidebar, etc.

I've never liked the active menu bar being translucent, so I hope they
still have a setting to turn that off.

I don't mind the subtle translucency they added in the menus in recent
versions, so if the window transparency is similar to that I'll be fine
with it.

To attract new customers, obviously. You and I are not the target
demographic, me thinks. A little translucency has never presented
an obstacle to me while using a Mac. Go figure.

Limited? Not me. More is better.

You can already find files by name. I don't think that functionality is
going away.

I do stuff like that all the time. What's the problem?

Submit feedback about it.

I disagree. As long as the search results are organized, there should be
no loss of usefulness.

Meh. I'm sure it'll be plenty useful.

name:flubber will search for files who's name contains flubber.

> iF i am looking for a recently downloaded submission from BelL Canada, I

Well, if it has "BelL Canada" in the name, just type name:BelL Canada
and hit return.

> I wish they would then let me right click to choose the app to open it.

If you are searching in a finder window, you can. If not, "Show all"
will give you a finder window where you can rlick.

> If spotlight will return all sorts of useless drivel from the internet,

I suspect that for nearly all users it will not be useless drivel nor
loosing usefulness.

> Having s mall buttons in the spotlight input field might be able to

That sounds needlessly complicated, and I didn't see anything in the
Spotlight UI bar for 10.10 in the keynote. Just a large
(NON-TRANSLUCENT) field to type in.

It does not appear that the CONTENT part of the window is translucent;
it also seemed like the translucence was pretty subtle. We shall see.

(I could make more specific comments, but I am restricting myself only
to what I saw in the Keynote, since that is not under NDA).

More useful, perhaps. I have found Spotlight to be really usable every
day since it first appeared.

Just sayin'. Your post is largely correct, IMO.

That's nowhere nearly the same thing as is being discussed.

Yeah, but it’s not intimately tied to Apple, either. As much as I like
integration of features and services, I think there do need to be boundaries
that are balanced better. But I’m the kind of guy that turned off Google
completion when Safari went to a unified address bar because I didn’t want
them being informed every time I went to find something in my browser
history.

That is not at all the same thing.

SMS message that your phone gets will be received on your non-cellular
iPad and Macs. AND you will be able to reply to those SMS messages, just
as if you were using your phone.

Most of these companies don't even exist.

Midwest Wireless? Nextel? Qwest? Are you serious?
