It’s even easier: hold down option-command and just hovering will show it.
Pre-dates Mavericks, too, I’m pretty sure.

In most cases, only part of the path is displayed though.

Thanks; but I'd prefer to do it through Spotlight, since that is
built-in and available on all my systems. For now, I'll just continue
using Command-click to open the parent folder in the Finder, where I can
easily right-click the file in question to copy the path to the
clipboard with a Service.

I hover over the file name and issue command-R, which does the same.

Not here. Command-R while hovering over any Spotlight result results in
the Spotlight menu disappearing, and nothing further. Hardly what I
consider to be useful.

Works here (OS X Mavericks 10.9.3)

Hmm... Not here, on multiple machines running 10.9.3. The menu
disappears, and I am switched to the Finder, and that's it. Nothing else
happens.

Mavericks 10.9.3, if I hover over a Spotlight result and press
command-R, the Spotlight menu goes away, the enclosing window for the
item opens, with the item itself selected.

Yes, and it's done this since spotlight was introduced.

Well I've never tried it until yesterday, and it doesn't work as
advertised on two different machines running 10.9.3. What does work,
however, is holding the Command key down while selecting an item in the
Spotlight menu. Doing that open the enclosing folder in the Finder,
where I can view or copy the path easily.

Yes, that works for me too, as well as the other.

This does not work for me on a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro, both running
10.9.3. But I can get the exact same effect by simply holding the
Command key while clicking an item in the Spotlight menu. What I would
really like is to be able to see the entire path - without switching to
the Finder. Being able to copy it directly to the clipboard (also
without switching) would be great too.

I've used Find Any File... it's pretty good - but I'm partial to
EasyFind.

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11076/easyfind

The options are easier for me to use. I just like the interface a
little better, and it's freeware.

It's a bit of a kludge, but if you click on "Show all in Finder", you
will get a list of files. Selecting one will show the path to that file
(if the Finder is configured to do so).

You can the path (or at least as much as will show) by holding down
command and option while hovering over the result in Spotlight, and
command-clicking on a result will open the folder containing a file.

Set DuckDuckGO as your search engine.

⌘-R, just like it's been since ... Mac OS 7? 8?

You're suggesting we invoke Spotlight, highlight a file in the Spotlight
menu, and then type Command-R?

Yes.

Been doing it for years.

In fact, it's one annoyance with Launchbar in that it uses ⌘-R to show
the list of running applications instead of revealing the current choice.

Interesting. I hadn't ever heard of Command-R with Spotlight before
yesterday.

Aha! I have LaunchBar installed, but haven't ever used the "running
applications" feature. Perhaps this explains why nothing happens on my
systems when I type Command-R with Spotlight results.
