And did "Moggie" come before or after "Sylvester"??? Yep, few people
could tell you, but anyone can tell you that 10.7 comes after 10.5.

Apple should also drop the pointless "X" as well.
   iOS 8
   Mac OS 10.10

Nice, simple, easy to understand.

True, but "Mac OS" is better than "OS X" ... unless Apple starts
licensing / selling OS X for non-Mac devices (i.e. boxes from Dell,
etc.).

Nope, you were just telling the truth that Mac OS 9 is much better and
Apple should go back to it. ;-)

Apple named the new OS "X", the previous OS was "Mac OS"

No there won't. The next version will be OS X 10.10 and the one after
that will be OS X 10.11

Most users could tell you by name either ... and they certainly
wouldn't be able to tell you which was a newer version by the silly
name. Using numbers is the ONLY way that makes any remote sense, which
is why anyone with any sense still includes the numbers. It's even
sillier since Aple uses number for iOS and idiotic meaningless names
for Mac OS X. :-\

I generally try to refer to both the name and number at least once in
anything I write about a particular OS X version, unless it is obvious
from context (e.g. in a discussion forum specific to that OS X version).

At one point I was mostly using the number in general contexts, but some
people asked me to mention the name, because they remembered the name in
association with a particular feature or issue, rather than remembering
the number (particularly if it was a version they hadn't used).

I tend to think the same way, at least for Jaguar (10.2) and later where
the name was used publically and I've seen or read enough about it. I
keep failing to remember which order the names were for 10.0 and 10.1,
so if I need to know, I look them up. Cheetah, Puma.

What baffles me is how Apple is almost exclusively referring to OS X
versions by name in their public descriptions, App Store listings,
upgrade notifications, etc., with the version number being buried in a
corner somewhere if it is shown at all, but "About This Mac" (and the
more detailed System Information in recent systems) only shows the
version number, not the name.

Exactly.

I dunno. A friend of mine who switched to the Mac from Windows a few
years ago asked me whether the iMac I offered to sell her two years ago
could run Panther. She didn't know about version numbers, but knew the
nicknames.

Generic question about WWDC OS-X keynotes:

In the past, did the keynote make announcements about certain
performance improvements etc (use of graphics cards for computing,
better multi-tasking, and the change in interrupt timings to cause
processes to wake up together to reduce use of battery etc etc ?

Or are those generally announced along with hardware announcements ?

I don't recall the 2014 WWDC keynote talking much about the kernel, and
lower level OS changes. Just wondering if those would normally be
expected later on, or if lack of such at WWDC means the core of the OS
is relatively stable from mavericks to yosemite.

There is *much* more to WWDC than just the keynote.

And almost all of it is NDA.

These days Keynote Speech is all about announcing new products for the
masses and the media - it has little to do with actual third-party
developing of software or hardware. The details such as your examples
are most likely during the presentations of the rest of actual
conference itself.

Most people. Almost all users. A few of the more geeky people as well.

Then I'm glad to be different. I almost always refer to Mac OS releases
by version number, so there is as little confusion as possible.
