As Apple is quick to point out, their users often quickly upgrade to
whatever the latest OS offering is. So, for most people, there is no
confusion when all they ever think about is whether or not the name they
know is the name of the current OS version. It’s only us developers and
other techies that really care about the full history enough to want to
know them by number.

Nope.

An app's specifications that says it requires "Snow Leopard or better"
is completely meaningless to everyone. An eBay auction selling
"Leopard" doesn't remotely tell you whether that's before or after
"Lion". etc. etc.

Anywhere sensible always lists the OS as "Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks",
which simply makes the name a pointless extra.

It's simply an idiotic marketing gimmick, and one that doesn't make any
sense at all ... iOS only uses numbers and Mac OS X should do the same.

Even the brianless fools running Microsoft have worked that out and
dropped "Windows XP" and "Windows Vista" to use just "Windows 7" and
"Windows 8" ... although they typically still make a mess of it by
having an "Xbox One" that is newer than an "Xbox 360". :-\

A lot of writing and emotion over "an idiotic marketing gimmick", no??
And I have it on good authority that there are at least a dozen fools
named Brian at M$.

Nope, if they had Brians then the company would be way better off ...
Brians are intelligent people - they have brains which are only
slightly confused. ;-)

Even if they don't know the national park, they almost certainly know
Yosemite Sam.

Or does he have a different name in other countries?

The names are just code names. Who cares?

Apple has used them in their marketing of OS releases for years, they're
not just internal code names. Back when you bought the release on disks,
the package said "OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard", with a picture of the beast.

Following on from Yosemite (Sam) The next Mac OS will be called Tweety
... "I tawt I thaw a puddy tat". ;-)

If they change over to full touchscreen / touchpad, then following the
animated character naming that version of the Mac OS could be
"Dangermouse". ;-)

Possibly in non-English speaking countries. Maybe Apple should start
use regionalised names: Mac OS Fuji in Jpana, Mac OS Gold Coast in
Australia, Mac OS Tongariro in New Zealand, etc. ;-)

Yosemite Sam is not a well known character, especially among younger
generations used to watch garbage like Pokemon. A lot of (older) people
probably only know of Yellowstone in confusion with Yogi Bear's
fictionalised version Jellystone.

Especially if they had their Bugs Bunny upbringing with the roughest,
toughest, root'nest, toot'nest, fastest gun-slinger west of the Pecos!

People will learn.

Yes, they said the names were going to be California names when they
announced Mavericks. The next 9 or 10 releases will be California names.

You will probably never see Weed or Death Valley, though.

Sadly it will come down to the Spanish-speaking world's initiative and
technical ability to create an OS that they can pronounce properly.

I'm not sure the rest of the wrold would use an OS that takes a nap at
noon. ;-)

True. It was my second guess from last year when Mavericks was
announced. First was Sequoia. Perhaps next year will be water again.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but from all the publicty and
keynote screenshots I've found so far, the "flattening" of Mac OS X has
removed the 3D Dock (or at least no it is longer the default).

I noticed it but didn't give it much thought, still haven't. I try not

Same here. Seems like a whole lot of people really care about things
like this. I couldn't care less what shade or color something is as long
as I can still get stuff done.

We might have to start a "Bring back the 3D Dock" petition. ;-)

Personally I don't care either, but there were people in here whining
on about how the persepctive was wrong and "annoying".

I complained when iOS7 came out almost entirely because of the over use
of pastels. My aging eyes need a bit more contrast, especially on the
very small phone screens. Since then I had cataract surgery and it
doesn't bother me as much, but if I had my druthers, I'd druther have
more contrast.

The dock has changed over the years a few times and just isn't an issue to me.
