That has happened to me once out of the dozen or so times I have
sold/given away things in Craigslist.

I have had various junk that I just put out at the curb. An old Knight
kit oscilloscope and communication receiver disappeared farly quickly.
It would save taking it to a recycling center.

I also remember Click an Clacks suggesting leaving dad cars unlocked in
a bad section of town.

Which was a joke.

This is actually quite risky, since you need to be aware enough of the
car to report it stolen in a reasonable amount of time, otherwise you
could be liable for crimes committed with the car, or at least under
police investigation.

it's not a joke.

if someone is going to steal stuff from your car, then it's better that
they do it *without* smashing a window.

you are not liable for any crimes committed should the car be stolen
and used in a crime. you'll be among those questioned, but assuming you
weren't involved, that's about all that will happen.

This is why I never lock my car, and never leave anything of value
inside of it.

Before I ever knew of Click and Clack, I had an old car that I parked
unlocked in LA's skid row. I think a beat up flashlight was stolen. The
real problem was that beer, but not all of it, was consumed in it. It
took a while to air out.

Cars are registered via the VIN. If it gets used in a bank robbery, say,
the cops will come to _your_ door. Or in this case, your dad's door.

Happened to one of our employees. He left work at about 6 and his car
was gone from the lot. Called the police. "We were wondering where
you were..." they replied, "... your car has been found."

His car had been used, that afternoon in a bank robbery a few clicks
away. They didn't suspect him very much as the MO fit some other
robberies where the first step was to steal a car in the hour before the
robbery. Still a couple cops spent close to an hour with him before
bringing him to the car which had been found another few clicks from the
bank. A few hundred bucks damage and a good tale to tell.

In Ontario we have front license plates. A few years ago I was parked in
Montreal (no front plates in Quebec) and when I came back from
Schwartz's, I noticed that my front plate was missing (no, it didn't
"bounce off" -- I'm more anal than that). It only costs $10 to replace
your plates in Ontario, but I was worried all the way home that some
assholes had attached it to the back of their getaway car.

IIRC his plate was changed too.

A couple of years ago the police here in New Zealand started a campaign
of replacing the license plate screws with "tamper-proof" versions to
try and stop people taking the plates and putting them on a different
car to the steal petrol from the petrol station (fill up and drive off
without paying, and the petrol station camera sees the wrong license
plate).

Problem is that no screw is really "tamper-proof" (from memory the only
difference was that these weren't able to be unscrewed using a standard
flat / cross head screwdriver). It's also a bit of a pain for people
like me who sawp the front and back plates every so often to even out
the road wear that occurs, or anyone who needs to remove the plates for
a reason (panelbeater, deregistering the car for a long term, etc.).

Do I really understand that you change the plates fore and aft because
the front plate begins showing wear?

I was wondering about that. Maybe he lives in the Sahara desert. Anyway,
our yearly registration stickers go on the back plate, so we can't
really do that (well, I could, I suppose, as long as I didn't do it more
than once't a year, but I guess I'm not that anal).

I pay for vanity plates for two of my cars, and I keep my cars a
relatively long time (usually 12 years or more) and I like to keep the
plates looking nice.

replace the front plate if it starts to look shabby. We also have the
registration stickers on the rear plate (three years), so one needs to
be careful when one replaces the back plate, because that entails
paying registration again.

That makes sense. We can get vanity plates in Ontario, but they cost
$250 and I don't care that much. In Quebec they don't have vanity plates
because they're frightened that the perfidious Anglo will write
something dirty or anti-french that slips by them. Also, the French word
for "seal" (like in the water) is "phoque." Stuff like that.

Front plates are kind of a dumb idea really both practically and
economically, my state hasn't required them for several decades.

Ontario moves in a sluggish manner. You can't even buy beer in the
grocery stores here, you have to go to the "Beer Store" which is owned
believe-it-or-don't by some fucking eurotrash consortium in Belgium or
some such godfersaken eurotrash country. They also own the toll freeway
across northern Toronto.

I lived in Quebec when they dropped the front plates, and everyone
started putting weird stuff on the front: "J'aime ma femme," Canadian
and Quebec flags and so on. Some guys made a bunch of money the first 4
months or so selling these things. I was driving a Scirocco at the time
and I immediately took the front plate-holder off and had a nice clean
bumper. That car was built like a tank too.

Yeah, well, ... they make (or at least did make) the best beer in the

As may be, but Ontario's "Beer Store" is owned by Molson/Coors and
Anhueser-Busch.

These are both huge companies. It is possible that one or both of
them accidentally make some good beer, though I doubt either makes the
best beer in the world.

(Michelob Pumpkin Spice Ale, anyone? Bud Light Lime? Coors Light Iced
T? yum.)
