Flash is up to date.

In Chrome (fully up to date) some videos will just not play. The page
upens fine and the black screen appears. But then nothing. None of the
functions on the black screen are clickable.

Ideas anyone ? google doesn't seem to solve.

Try another browser like Safari. Chrome uses their own engine rather
than WebKit, which is part of MacOS. If it still doesn't display, try
Firefox. I have multiple anti-tracking and adware apps running on
Chrome that sometimes prevent videos from playing. I try a couple
browsers to see if there's any difference. Usually Firefox can play it
as it has no extra plugins.

If youtube isn't playing, then you have a bigger problem.

Google is progressively moving from the Flash and Chrome player to a new
JavaScript player. It's all very new so it's likely to have bugs in
itself and at the same time be revealing new bugs in browsers. The
JavaScript version (I don't use Chrome or Flash) glitches up for me
quite a bit.

The three forms look identical so only right-clicking says which it is.

I'm surprised anyone can get away without using Flash. I tried to for
a while, but it seems that the vast majority of video is presented via
Flash.

I had heard a couple of years ago that Google would supply all vids in
html5.... seems not :(

actually very few sites use flash (about 15% currently) and of those
that do, there is almost always an html5 version, particularly for
video.

that means that sites that are flash-only without any alternative are
fairly rare.

Certainly not Youtube and others - they use HTML5. Maybe a lot of porn
sites use Flash. And some awefully designed web sites that are Flash
only (I usually just avoid those altogether).

It is true that many sites lie about requiring flash. I used to simply
change the user agent in Safari to say it was the iPad version of
safari, and then videos would load.

I don't do that anymore. I figure if the cunts are going to lie about
requiring flash, I don't care to load their sites.

There's never been a video on a web site that I *had* to see.

I see. I wouldn't have known the difference. When I run into a site
that tells me I need Flash, I assume it's true.

Extending that I guess I don't "have" to run a computer either...

If you enable the debug menu and Safari and change your user agent to the
iPad user agent you will find that the vast majority of those sites
claiming to require flash do not, they are simply too lazy to send the
x264 video to a computer. Perhaps they are getting kickbacks from Adobe.

I do, my job (such as it is) depends on it. Most of the things I do
actually do require a computer.

I use Safari: Is there a way to force programs to play without using
Flash as a generic default of some kind?

read what he wrote.

set the user agent to ipad and most sites will send non-flash content.

however, there are a few that will still send flash and generally,
those sites are not worth the bother.

If the video is a Flash video, AFAIK, then that's the only thing that
will play it. It's proprietary but you can download the video and
transcode it to something else.

So, no. If you don't have the Flash plug-in or player App, nothing else
I know of will play the video. You can prevent flash from playing
altogether by installing ClickToFlash or ClickToPlugin

Go to http://www.youtube.com/html5 to see what your browser supports,
and acquire an html5 cookie by clicking on the "Request the HTML5 player"
button.

This may not work around the Youtube bugs mentioned downthread, but
for what little video I watch, it's been ok.

Chrome does not use the system-installed flash. If you run chrome, there
is absolutely no reason to install flash on your computer. ever.

That does mean that if chrome is using an older flash, you're stuck with
it.

That happens a lot with youtube. I doubt it has anything to do with the
Flash version Chrome is using.

Links to some of the offending videos would be most helpful.

Tks Jolly ..... and to all others !

I am testing some solutions and getting informed about the Java 6 and 7
problem with Chrome ... so this might all fix it (it was virtually all
videos btw)

Same issue here. When it happens I just use Safari instead for that
video. I don't like Safari much - but at least it plays videos most of
the time.

Guys ... I promised I would come back.

I have (I think) solved the problem and it was not flash problems as I
had expected.

The problem turned out to be the Extension "iTube Studio"

I disabled all of my extensions one by one and restarted them and bingo.

Thanks all of you for responding to my post(s)
