The security updates that Apple released for Lion and Mountain Lion at the same time as 10.9.2 fixed several issues, and at least some of those clearly will affect Snow Leopard, which didn't get a corresponding security update. Here is that list of fixes (filtering for 10.7.5 left as an exercise for the reader): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6150 The ones which clearly affect 10.6 are the Apache and PHP bugs, and all the QuickTime bugs. Some of the other security issues fixed in 10.7.5 might also affect 10.6.8 but I haven't bothered investigating. Someone using Apache and PHP on Snow Leopard can work around those bugs by not using Apple's installation and setting up their own. If you think the QuickTime bugs might not apply to Snow Leopard, then see also the list of bugs which were fixed in QuickTime 7.7.5 for Windows, some of which are the same as the QuickTime bugs fixed in the security updates for OS X 10.7.5 and later: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6151 If QuickTime on Windows and on OS X 10.7.5 and later had the same security bugs, it seems certain that those bugs also affect QuickTime on Snow Leopard. As for Safari, it is harder to tell whether the various security issues Apple has fixed in Safari 6 or later (on Lion or later) since last September also affect Safari 5 (on Snow Leopard), but the chances are pretty high that some of them do, especially the Webkit issues. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6000 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6082 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6145 The evidence is pretty clear (now) that Apple released the last general security update for Snow Leopard in September 2013, i.e. there were no more general security updates for Snow Leopard from the point Mavericks was released (October). That means Apple is now supplying general security updates for the three most recent major versions of OS X, up from their previous limit of two versions, due to the shorter time span between versions. That doesn't rule out the possibility that Apple might still be updating Snow Leopard's XProtect mechanism, and they might yet do one-off security updates to deal with known exploits in the wild which might affect a significant number of Snow Leopard users (like they did with a late security update and Flashback removal tool for Leopard). I'm not sure yet whether Safari for Snow Leopard has had its final update, but it seems likely since timing was similar for the final Safari update for Leopard, and the list of fixes in later versions is getting too big to ignore. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

When you install "major" middleware like Apache, Bind, PHP, Mysql etc, you need to ensure that you effectively "remove" the Apple supplied copy. And when you move say Apache to a new place, you need to ensure that the standard PATH as used by Apple utilities points to the new places. (for instance, if server manager calls up aopachectl as a subprocess, its path must point "apachectl" to the right directory. You also need to update the man pages and remove the apple supplied ones for the older version. With Apple no longer updating Snow Leopard, this becomes a safer/easier task since there is less worry about Apple re-installing a patched older version but one still has to be weary of this.

I left Apple's stuff where it was (and, in the case of Apache, even used it occasionally); I just set my PATH variable so that my bin directories were searched before Apple's. As you point out about man pages, I did the same with the MANPATH variable, without removing the old pages. A fully updated Snow Leopard system has Apple-supplied Apache 2.2.24, PHP 5.3.26 and Ruby 1.8.7-p358. (It turns out one of the issues Apple listed under the PHP heading is actually a Ruby one, so Apple got either the description wrong or the CVE number wrong, or the CVE entry doesn't mention that it also affects PHP.) http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2013-1862 http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2013-1896 The first one affects Apache 2.2.x prior to 2.2.25. The second one affects all versions of Apache prior to 2.2.25. Apple's distribution of Apache on Snow Leopard is vulnerable to both. http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2013-4073 This affects Ruby prior to 1.8.7-p374. Apple's distribution of Ruby on Snow Leopard is vulnerable. http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2013-4113 http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2013-4248 http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2013-6420 The first one affects PHP prior to 5.3.27. The second one affects PHP prior to 5.4.18. The third one affects PHP prior to 5.3.28. Apple's distribution of PHP on Snow Leopard is vulnerable to all three. As for the Safari security issues, a quick check shows that the WebKit fixes in Safari 6.1 affected WebKit in iOS 6.1.4 and all earlier iOS versions (back to 2007), and by implication of Apple releasing a fix it also affected the Mac version of WebKit in 10.7.5 and later. That is enough evidence to convince me that the unpatched WebKit in OS X 10.6.8 is vulnerable without having to delve deeper. Safari 6.1 was released in late October 2013, so WebKit and Safari on Snow Leopard have had publically identified vulnerabilities for almost five months. That is a strong indication that Snow Leopard is no longer getting Safari or security updates. > > The evidence is pretty clear (now) that Apple released the last general > > security update for Snow Leopard in September 2013, i.e. there were no > > more general security updates for Snow Leopard from the point Mavericks > > was released (October). > > While that is possible, I find it unlikely considering Apple still sells > Snow Leopard. I think the only reason they are still visibly selling Snow Leopard is it is a prerequisite in the official path to upgrade an Intel Mac running Leopard to a later version of OS X which is still supported. For example, the "how to upgrade" page for Mavericks links to Snow Leopard in the online store if you want to upgrade from Leopard to Mavericks. http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/ Even if Intel Macs running Leopard or Tiger only upgraded as far as Snow Leopard, they would have caught up on two or four more years of security updates, and would be able to run a wider range of software including third party web browsers which are still supported. Most of those Macs can upgrade to 10.7 and many can upgrade to 10.9, if they don't have other reasons to stay on 10.6. I think Apple should remove Snow Leopard from the online store and require a phone call to Apple Sales to order it, like they do for 10.6 Server. The "how to upgrade" page could explain this. I expect you can still order earlier versions of OS X by calling Apple Sales (e.g. if you still wanted to upgrade a PowerPC Mac to Leopard), even though those versions clearly aren't getting security updates. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
