Disk Maker X works wonders for easily making this bootable flash drive
for the most lay of men. And it works great with the (apparently)
controversial 8GB flash drive.

But it must have to "squeeze" the data. Which makes the data
uncomfortable, and then when you give it space to stretch back out on
your computer's hard drive, it ends up taking up too much room -
right?

Yep. You can find a procedure online. There a couple nits to watch for.

I did it with an 8 GB.

I do it often in my line of work. An 8GB drive will work - use a
program called Diskmaker X.

This is the most succinct description I've seen of the procedure(s):

10-9-mavericks-usb-install-drive/>

and this will tell you how to install Mavericks on older Mac Pros:

Whole heartedly reccomend Diskmaker X. I could make the drive by hand
but 2 clicks with Diskmaker X and its off to work, I go grab a cup of
coffee and come back to a properly formatted 10.7/10.8/10.9 bootable
Flash Drive.

Ditto when it used to be called Lion DiskMaker and I used it to make Mac
OS X 10.8.2 onto a slow DL-DVD. :D
