I'm sure weasel will jump all over my obvious mistake above (he's all
about petty distraction arguments, after all; and it's all he's got).

What I actually meant to write was "16GB isn't substantially more
expensive than 8GB" (Duh.).

It does not look like an *obvious* mistake. I would say it was said
under HES. But don't worry, you are clearly unstoppable, now and then
you are on rails going somewhere decent, other times on ones going to
fuckwitland.

You think I actually meant that a 8GB stick was more expensive than a
16GB stick? Uh huh, sure you did. How genuine you are! And sparkly
clean, too!

he almost certainly wanted to buy something and be sure what he bought

i consider 2 gig free to be 'stuffed'.

you obviously do not.

fill your drive to 2 gig free and see how well that works out for you.

hfs also has some well known bugs with very little free space, although
that's probably not an issue with an installer, however, it is why i
consider 2 gig free to be 'stuffed'.

nonsense. you made that up.

nope. it was in the original statement, which you even quoted.

not only are you lying but you don't even know what you're yapping
about.

the real hoot is i actually agreed with something you said, yet you
argue. you're fucked up.

rest of your lies snipped.

You don't know anything of the sort. He may have had an 8GB stick
sitting right beside him for all you know. But you need to argue this
point because you cannot admit you are wrong, ever.

The installer works just fine on an 8GB stick.

Correction: I *know* not. The fact is the installer works just fine on
an 8GB stick.

Nice try weasel. We're talking about an installer here, not a hard
drive. Again, the fact is the installer works just fine on an 8GB stick.

Doesn't apply here, weasel. The installer works just fine on an 8GB
stick.

OP: "what size drive is needed?".
Weasel: "16 gig, but it might be possible to stuff it into 8 gig"

OP: "what size drive is needed?".
Weasel: "16 gig, but it might be possible to stuff it into 8 gig"

I'm the OP and the reason I asked before trying was that when I
download I want to go right into the procedure without messing
around seeing the size of the file and then running out to buy a
drive, etc.

Actually, since in my original message I said that I installed 10.8
from a stick it should be clear that I already have an 8 GB (or
larger) stick. However, I don't want to overwrite the 8 GB stick.
That's because it's in my nature not to throw anything away -- in
this case, the 10.8 installer -- unless I'm certain sure that I
definitely will not want it back later. (See another thread some
time ago about why one might keep stuff lying around in Trash for a
while.)

I found it very effective training to auto-delete trash after a
reasonably short period of time. At one point I had a script that did it
every 72 hours.

In our case, Herself expected me to maintain _her_ computer, so I'd say
"well, let's empty the Trash and tidy up your drives" and she's all
"well, wait ..." so I gave her a firm lecture on the subject. Also, in
the Old Days (tm) we had limited disk space, so "storing" stuff in the
Trash was counterproductive. Nowadays, everyone has gazzilabytes of
space, so that's not an issue. I just find it untidy. Ordo sana in ordo
sana.

I use a program called TrashTimer on my (and my SO's) Mac which empties
files in the trash after a set delay. On mine it's set to 24 hours; on
hers, it's set to 2 weeks.

So I don't pay much attention to the trash and it gets emptied as time
goes on - or when I'm clearing the trash from a thumb drive or similar.

That would work real well in our house. 2 weeks and one minute later
she'd say "AHHHHHH ...". And so on.

Hi!
Do the maths. It's not close at all, just a weenie bit cheaper. :-)

He won't do it. He'll weasel around and try to find reasons why 8GB
*isn't* sufficient, even though it is perfectly sufficient for this use.

I did it in 8 GB. No issues.

8GB is not only possible, it works fine. So if you already have an 8GB
stick, there's no need to purchase a larger one.

Thanks. I thought that would probably be the case.

I did it using the 'createinstallmedia' tool, but there are other
options. This MacWorld article gives a decent overview:
