Archive and install keeps the user data and installs new system files, whereas erase and install wipes the disk you want to install to. If it moves the current system to an "Archived" folder, then it doesn't mean you have the system as it was before. None of the preferences stored in /Library and /Systrem/Library survive, and you will have to manually move applicatiosn from the archive to the new /Applications, same for their preference files. That is a lot of work. It is easier to upgrade to Snow Leopard and then upgrade to Mavericks because that removes the need to do the manual conversion/move of apps etc. However, such an exercise does help you document what apps you need, and which ones you can drop. It is however time consuming.

I'd definitely say the pre-OS X days were "very long" ago. I started with Macs in 2001 with OS 9.2 and OS X 10.0.4. I never had to install a pre-OS X system so I never ran into the term before. -- K. There are quite a few models that are officially able to run both Leopard and Mavericks, so if someone is running Leopard on an Intel Mac, it is worth checking. Furthermore, anyone still running Tiger (10.4.x) or Leopard (10.5.x) on an Intel Mac which is accessing the Internet really should upgrade it at least to Snow Leopard (10.6.x) for better security and compatibility with more up to date web browsers.
