$$ are $$. I would have to replace too much software for, in my opinion,
an unimportant "up"grade.

Apple does not care a penny on people who want to stay on Snow Leopard.
They want to sell hardware. Ideally a new one each year...

I'm on it for exactly one reason: My older version of Photoshop isn't
supported by 10.7. If/when I can get my hands on a newer version....

In my case, it lets me use one PPC program that is not available for a
Intel-based Macs. Indeed, I am keeping ML on my most frequently used Mac
because the upgrade to Mavericks lost support for an important program
for me, EndNoteX4. I am running Mavericks on my laptop, but have SL
partitions on both machines.

I agree that Apple should have a published policy about how long they
supply security updates for old versions of OS X.

Apple's policy appears to be designed to push OS version upgrades, if
you want to get security fixes for a reasonable lifetime for your Mac.
If you never upgrade the OS which came with the Mac, you might get as
little as two years of security updates. If you do upgrade the OS, you
should get at least five years of security updates, and in most cases at
least six years. (The only recent case under five years was the last
PowerMac G5 models, discontinued August 2006 and had their final
possible security update in July 2011.)

The timing has been similar for recent OS X versions, so there shouldn't
be any surprises if you have been paying attention.

10.3: introduced October 2003, final security update November 2007.
10.4: introduced April 2005, final security update September 2009.
10.5: introduced October 2007, final security update June 2011 (there
was also a special Flashback update in May 2012).
10.6: introduced August 2009, final security update September 2013.
10.7: introduced July 2011, still getting security updates.
10.8: introduced July 2012, still getting security updates.
10.9: introduced October 2013, getting minor version updates.

The general pattern is that each version is supported with security
updates (including those in the initial minor version updates) for about
four years after it was released. The cutoff is around the time a
subsequent major version is released, so the "about four years" varies
by a few months.

10.3: final security update was one month after the release of 10.5.
10.4: final security update was one month after the release of 10.6.
10.5: final security update was one month before the release of 10.7.
10.6: final security update was one month before the release of 10.9.

It used to be the case that security updates continued until the second
subsequent version was released, but because Apple went to roughly
annual releases after 10.7, 10.6 got security updates until the third
subsequent version, and if the timing pattern continues, 10.7 and later
should get security updates until the fourth subsequent version is
released, i.e. 10.7 should get security updates until about late 2015,
10.8 until about late 2016, etc.

Until the release of 10.9.2 and associated security updates, we didn't
know whether Snow Leopard was going to get a reprieve and be supported
for longer than was the case for earlier versions. It turned out to be
the same timing as Leopard (relative to when a subsequent new version
was released about four years later).

It is also worth noting that at the point each of 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6
got their final security update, they were being used by 18% to 22% of
Mac users according to web usage stats from marketshare.hitslink.com
(more like 15% to 19% by the time they missed out on a susbsequent round
of updates, which is the danger point).

Given the even lower usage level of 10.7 (below 16% as of last month),
Apple might change their unpublished policy and only supply security
updates for about 3 years for 10.7 and later, i.e. stop updating Lion
around late 2014. That would be sufficient to supply at least five years
of security updates to the newest Macs unable to upgrade to 10.8 (Mac
Mini bought around Feb 2009), assuming that OS version upgrades are
installed.

10.8 might get even less than 3 years, because 10.9 is free and didn't
drop support for any models, and because 10.8's usage level is already
below 20%.

10.9's web usage level is likely to reach 50% of Macs in either the
February or March stats. 10.7 and 10.8 didn't quite make it to 50%
before the next version came out, but 10.5 and 10.6 did (each got to
70%, but they had twice as long to do it).

You use the word "upgrade". If Snow Leopard to Lion had been an
"upgrade" I would have agreed. Bit Lion and successors are not really
upgrades since there is loss of functionlity, and major changes on UI.

When Apple did not have annual changes to the OS, it perhaps had more
time to ensure thsoe changes were true upgrades. But with yearly
changes, I doubt they have the time to ensure this is truly an upgrade
especially since many changes are done just for the sake of changing stuff.

(Removing Save AS is one such bonehead moves).

I haven't seen an OS "upgrade" in years that didn't lose me a lot more
than I gained--IF I gained anything.

Of course, a couples of the reason MS had to keep supporting XP was that
Vista was so bad that no one wanted to adopt it, and that companies are
pretty much against changing OSs when the old one seemed to work fine.
Since Windows has been designed for corporate clients, they had no
choice but to keep supporting it.

Indeed Vista spurred my jump to Mac.

Considering Snow Leopard was the last version to have a true server
version, (and support for Xserves), I find it disapointing that they
would not have 5 year support for servers.

BTW, this article was written by a known anti-Apple agitator and bears
no relationship to actual facts.

Snow Leopard is still purchasable from Apple, and there is no indication
that there will not be any further updates for it.

There is one pretty good indication: Updates for Snow Leopard have
ceased completely since shortly after Mavericks came out. In the past
week there have been security updates for Safari on later operation
systems, but not for Snow Leopard.

Do those security updates for Safari have any relevance for Snow
Leopard?

Can't say, although it seems likely. But there hasn't been a software
update of any kind for Snow Leopard since mid-December. Before that,
there were at least several a week, without fail. You said there had
been "no indication". I think the lack of software updates for nearly
three months screams "indication".
