ROFL - actually I'm delighted you thought of doing that. Wouldn't work
with my iMac - but probably with the MBA and MBP here.

Ah, so that's why they put the logo there!

There was a big parental controls bug for me. I tried setting up a
managed account so that the only restriction was two apps were blocked.
The result was that every app except Finder was blocked. I'm not sure if
this is 10.9.2 related or not because I didn't try it before 10.9.2.

I'm still on 10.8.5 because there were enough gripes here about
Mavericks that I thought I'd wait for 10.9.1. Then when it came out
there were more gripes so I decided to wait for 10.9.2. Has the time
come upgrade? When/if I download will I get 10.9.2, and if I don't
is there a combo update?

I'm sure if you want, you can find gripes about *every single release
ever*. Meanwhile, plenty of us are happily using the latest version.
Perhaps it's all about your perspective.

Given the various bits of rash I and others have seen with 10.9.2 - I'd
wait another month or so for 10.9.3

If you upgrade to Mavericks now via the App Store, you will go straight
to 10.9.2.

If you had previously downloaded an older Mavericks installer and use
that now, it will probably try to download the 10.9.2 installer anyway.
If it can't and you end up with 10.9 or 10.9.1, you can then use
Software Update in App Store to update directly to 10.9.2, or you can
download the 10.9.2 combo update from Apple's download support site.

As for the gripe level: after one day, I've noticed several improvements
over 10.9.1, but I haven't had time yet to hunt down whether there are
still annoying gremlins which affect me.

There are gripes about every release of OS X every time.

It's a free upgrade; you have nothing to lose. If you find it's not to
your liking you can always restore 10.8.5 from backup.

When time is money, this is not a free upgrade. When you have had a Snow
Leopard system that was tuned to your liking with all the various
customizations (such as enabling various unix services such as telnet,
X11 etc), then moving to Mavericks involves a lot of time and testing to
get your environment bacvk to what it was before, espewcially whjen you
have to do research to revert many of the undesirable changes.

Enable telnet? I've never had to do that. It has always been included
and always worked.

I'm betting he meant enabling the telnet daemon (not that that's hard to
do).

Well, in any case, we were talking about moving to 10.9 from 10.8; not
from 10.6. For me, moving from 10.8 to 10.9 didn't disrupt anything.

I've had occasional nuisances with various system updates - especially
with server type stuff; but I've come to expect that. In general,
though, it's been relatively smooth sailing.

I've never enabled the telnet daemon in OS X. Heck, the last time I
enabled telent was under RedHat in... I don't even know, 1994? No, must
have been later than that. It was an early version of Redhat. Maybe '97?

I sometimes, though rarely, have to use telnet to talk to a really
stupid device (like a router), but most devices aren't that stupid
anymore and have either an icky webface or support ssh.

Mostly what I use telnet for is testing if the identd spoofer I wrote is
up and running.

<checks>

Yep, it's running.

Well some of us aren't so lucky.

Apple has changed how these things are done over the years, same with
other services such as NFS and others. And post Snow Leopard, enabling
NFS becomes more complicated, so it takes time to learn.

So while many thing continue to be available, the upgrade itself
requires a lot of time/research to re-enable stuff that are now done
diffently on teh new version, as well as disabling the new undesirable
stuff.
