I've been having a problem intermittently ever since I installed Mavericks. The USB ports aren't being recognized. Software that is supposed to use devices connected to these ports isn't taking input from these devices. What's going on here?

Which devices?
I spent an hour on the phone with a senior engineer at
Apple. My disk docks have occasionally been disconnecting (USB 3.0, not
2.0). Come to think of it they're behaving perfectly today.
He's sent me a package to trap disconnect events and send them back to
Apple. I'll try to get to it this week (have to - the link back expires
on Sat.)
In the meantime look at your system profiler to see what the device
status is. There may be clues there. (hold the option key and click
the Apple logo, select system information; look at the USB stuff).
Oh. If you're using a hub, try re-starting the hub (disconnect power
and cable to computer) if you've added USB 3.0 devices and it had no USB
3.0 devices before that. (Anker hubs or hubs with the VLI chipset).

Come to think of it they're behaving perfectly today. That seems to be a "feature" of USB3. As I've sadi in the past, it happens on OS X and Windows machines. USB3 is faser than USB2, but it's damn unstable with most devices. -- Once again I teeter at the precipice of the generation gap.

Well, either it's a cable problem, a device problem or a driver problem. If you switch out the cable with something you *know* works OK, does the problem go away? If you move the *suspect* cable to another device, does the problem follow? Have you checked with the vendor that makes the device to find out if it works with 10.9. If it's old, chance are you're probably looking at replacing it. If you restore your system to the previous release of MacOS before 10.9 (whatever you were running) from the backup you took before you upgraded, does the problem go away? OR install 10.8 in Parallels or Fusion and run the older version of the OS in a VM. Does the device work with that? These are just some of the things I might try. -- DeeDee, don't press that button!
