#56934 — Lion and scrollbar arrows?

FromErikRS <mac-dane@is.invalid>
Date2014-02-24 03:03 +0100
SubjectLion and scrollbar arrows?
Message-ID<lee994$bsp$1@solani.org>
Hi

I've been forced to switch to Lion on my newly bought MacPro1.1 Xeon
DualCore 4x3,0ghz, due to the use of specific software that requires
Lion... - But it /does/ irritate me like ... that it isn't possible to
have double-arrows in the scrollbars...

Is it in any way possible to get the arrows back again in Lion v. 10.7.5...?

Lion Tweeks doesn't give the possibility, neither do TinkerTools,
Cocktail or Onyx. - A search on the web gives multiple discussions in a
variety of fora, but no real help - just 'advicing' on upgrading to
Mountain Lion.:-(

cheers, Erik Richard

Your knee-jerk reaction against the loss of the double arrows is
understandable. We all find changes in new OS versions that we don't
like. If you are typical user and not a sorehead, you will become
accustomed to the new scheme in a short time and you will forget that
double arrows ever existed. They're a poor substitute for a scrolling
mouse or trackpad, anyway.

Indeed. The changes bothered me at first. While I did get accustomed to
the changes, they still somewhat irked me until I finally bit the bullet
and got myself a Magic Trackpad and learned to use gestures for
clicking, dragging, and scrolling. Ever since then haven't missed
persistent visible scroll bars or the little arrows at the top and
bottom.

You can have the scrollbars themselves back - also permanently, but no
arrows any way... I can't use a trackpad because of various problems
with my hands such as problems with my wrist and partially missing parts
of two fingers on my right hand.

Yes, and I do display them always.

Correct. Arrows are gone. I don't miss them; but I don't use a mouse
much anymore.

That sucks. It's quite a better experience than a mouse, IMO.

Trackpads and the Apple Magic Mouse also make my wrists sore. I use a
decade-old Logitech USB mouse with scroll wheel and have never had a
complaint with it.

I have a wireless mouse with no buttons at all. Much easier on old
wrists. I can just lean on it 8-)

The wired MM is somewhat less fiddley to reassemble after cleaning, and
there's no batteries to worry about.

Ugh. I took my Magic Mouse out of a drawer and tried it out again. Sore
tendon after five minutes. Back in the drawer it goes. Maybe out the
window would be even better.

I've never had a mouse give me physical pain; but then I tend to stop
using any device at the first sign of discomfort, long before pain sets
in, and also adjust my grip and posture so that it doesn't become a
problem to begin with.

The Magic Mouse did cause me pain after 45 minutes. Something about the
way I had to hold it cause my shoulder to start aching after 45minutes.
I took it back to the Apple Store and got the mobile trackpad which I
only use rarely when I'm reading lots of stuff. I much prefer the
Macally iMouse or the Digital Innovations mouse. It fits my hand and
doesn't need any sort of special driver.

Huh! Don't do that. - It might hurt the one it hits.:-)

None that I've heard about. In Lion, Apple reimplemented the scroll bar
controls and the new ones have no support for arrows at all, so there is
no hidden setting to be tweaked by third party utilities or "defaults
write".

I didn't particularly care about that lost feature, as I was normally
scrolling with a trackpad or mouse scroll wheel anyway.

Upgrading to a later OS X version won't bring the scroll bar arrows
back.

One possible solution: if you only need Lion for one application, and
really want arrows in scroll bars in as many places as possible _apart_
from that application, you could revert to Snow Leopard as your main OS,
and run Lion inside a virtual machine, just for that application.

Unfortunately that violates Lion's SLA. Lion is only licensed to run
in a virtual machine if the host OS is also Lion.

A dual-boot system (Snow Leopard on one volume and Lion on another)
would work.

Could do, /if/ the voices needed mentioned in other replies would be

Are we sure Apple's SLA is valid in Denmark?

Indeed it is... It's even written in Danish when you open an Apple
installer.:-) - And even if it wasn't, I'd still be under this SLA,
since my computers are registered at Apple USA and not Apple Denmark.

As already answered to Vaveud and JollyRoger I can't use a normal
trackpad - not even a normal mouse will do for me. I only have
Kensington trackballs, which I mostly can use - also using the palm of
my hand(s).

Therefore I normally use the scroll-ring inline in texts and windows,
but this isn't always usable when using the scanner software mentioned
below. - As I read the possibilities in Lion you can only set the
scrollbar scrolling to either 'jump to mouse point' or 'jump to
next/previous page'...

Unfortuantely that won't do. It's moe applications that I need to runa
alongside with the use of TTS with multi-lingual voices from a Brother
pro network scanner. Both 10.5.x and 10.6.x are supported in the scanner
software, but none of the voices I need are usalbe in neither systems.

Note that scroll bars become important when you have multiple scollable
areas inside the same scrollable window. It becomes hard for the
software to know which scroll you want to do with mouse/trackpad. The
scroll bar makes it explicit which scrollable area you are controlling.
