#56718 — periodic tasks execute twice -- why?

Subjectperiodic tasks execute twice -- why?
Message-ID<nomailpls-535275.13342219022014@mx05.eternal-september.org>
On my two Macs running Tiger (10.4.11), running the periodic log
rotation scripts results in the script executing twice in rapid
succession: for example, doing "sudo periodic daily" causes /etc/daily
to be run twice, one right after the other, as indicated in the
/var/log/daily.out file. This happens whether the script is "manually"
invoked as above, or executes at the normal time-of-day as configured in
the com.apple.periodic-daily.plist configuration file. This has really
got me stumped; does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should
look at? Many thanks in advance...

man periodic

and then look at /etc/periodic.conf to see if there is any duplication.

You might wish to look in the daily, weekly etc directories for
duplication of files

He mentioned an /etc/daily script, not /etc/periodic.daily directory. It
sounds like the organization was different in Tiger.

It's possible he's running into a bug that was fixed in a later release.

Yep. There's even an Apple discussion thread about it:

Ah! Thank you, JR: I missed that in all my googling. Cheers!

I'll bet the solution by AppleGeek near the end of the thread will solve
the problem for you.

It did indeed. I had *seen* those ".applesaved" periodic scripts in the
/etc/periodic/ tree while poking at the problem, but simply didn't
understand that *all* the files in the (for example)
/etc/periodic/daily/ directory would be run when launchd got around to
it. Moving the "xxx.applesaved" files away made the problem go away.
Thanks to all of you for helping!
