#56627 — Dragged files show up in the corner

Fromisw <isw@witzend.com>

SubjectDragged files show up in the corner
Message-ID<isw-23AAB2.12123917022014@[216.168.3.50]>
Often (but not always), when I drag a file from some other folder onto
the desktop, the file shows up half off the screen in the upper left
corner, no matter where the cursor is when I let go. If I drag several
files, they wind up in a pile at that location.

Why does that happen, and how can I stop it?

Sounds like a bug in older versions of Finder. Perhaps it's still
lurking for some edge case...

how cluttered is your desktop?

usually the files pile up on the top right where the disks are when
there's no space for another icon.

i've never seen it on the left though.

Have you set a View Option and Arrange by pref for Finder?

Btw, how full is your desktop with Icons (I have had pile ups when
opening my MB without the extra monitor I usually have connected).

Not sure what you're asking. I'm unaware of any "view option" for the
desktop -- it's icons.

A couple dozen. Way fewer than sometimes. There is plenty of room all
over the desktop for icons to go.

You can change the way icons are shown on the desktop:

<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3737>

He's asking you how your desktop is currently configured.

There is nothing on the page that you reference above to solve the OP's issue with files dragged on to the Desktop which are then deposited by the Finder in the top left corner of the Desktop. The real problem is Apple programmers just don't preserve the x,y coordinates and, since they don't, the file(s) receive values of (0,0) i.e. the top left corner of the screen.

Apparently you are having a hard time keeping track of the conversation.
Maybe I can help. Here's what happened:

1. The OP asked for help in determining two things:
   a. Why icons aren't going where they should
   b. What he can do to fix it
2. Another person replied asking the OP how his desktop display is
configured. Logic dictates they asked this because it might help
determine an answer to the first part of the question (a. Why icons
aren't going where they should).
3. The OP replied stating he wasn't sure what they meant.
4. I replied with a link that shows the OP where to see the Desktop
display settings so that he may answer the question.

Notice that nowhere did I indicate that the information at the link I
provided would solve the issue.

Please try harder to keep up.

Coming from the Apple fan boy whose every response on this thread has been arrogant and contemptuous, I'd rather join the others and choose to ignore your nonsense.

That the best you got? Calling me an Apple fan boy for genuinely trying
to help someone? Sorry, but you'll have to do better than that to pierce
this skin, Nancy.

Please do go right ahead and ignore my posts though.

Bingo! First reasonable response. Thanks.

That seems incorrect to me. Some people in this thread have already
discussed the fact that on occasion, icons get placed incorrectly.
Others have asked questions about how the OP's desktop is configured,
but haven't been able to get that information due to an unwillingness or
inability of the OP to provide it.

Which configuration would cause dropped icons to occasionally be
deposited in the upper left corner?

If I knew that, I could check to see if that's the way I have things set
up.

FWIW, the desktop is set to "View/Sort by: None". Honestly, I thought
that would have been completely obvious. No other "Sort by:" choice
would allow icons to (usually) stay where they were dropped, and that
was the core of my original post.

From the traffic in this thread, I now believe that the problem is due
to a bug in Finder, and that there is no "fix". So be it.

add it to the list of the many other finder bugs that won't ever be
fixed.

Click on the desktop to be in Finder. You should have a menu item
called View. Under that item in a dropdown there should be a sub item
called Arrange by... Select that and you get choices.

There is also another item under the View menu called Show View
Options, this gives you choices for the desktop too.

I find arrange by date modified to be a convenience for icons on the
desktop because the most recent are always where I expect them, top
rightish.

Do some preference setting in the settings mentioned above and see
what happens.

That option is available for ordinary folders, but not for the desktop
(at least in 10.8.2 ML).

> There is also another item under the View menu called Show View

But nothing about where to put the icons. There are many more options if
opened in an ordinary folder.

I use various icon arrangements for various folders, depending. For the
desktop, I want icons to go *right where I put them* and *stay there*.

> > > Btw, how full is your desktop with Icons (I have had pile ups when

Currently, 50 icons. Fewer that sometimes. It's a fairly large screen,
so there's no crowding.

> Do some preference setting in the settings mentioned above and see

As I said, they are not available for the desktop.

Anyhow, I do not want the icons arranged for me. I want them to be right
where I put them.

Interesting. The Arrange By option is there in Snow Leopard. I wonder
why they would have removed it.

It would be very interesting if in later than SL, there was no option
somewhere in the OS to arrange by one of the dates, or name, size,
kind etc. I don't believe it! Or maybe, in later OSs it follows the
way a user sets the desktop folder itself (when say viewed in column
view in a directory window?) - in SL these are separately configurable.

Anyway, the idea was to try some cleanup and arrange to see what
happens to pile up in OP's situation. The smaller the icons, of
course, the more will fit on a desk (though space is said by OP not to
be the problem).

OP wants to be able to put the icons where he wants - a way, by the
way, that lends itself to stark demonstrations of the power of
entropy. I used to have this! The setting to get it is "None" under
View Options when in Desktop, I just for fun tried it again and it
made various pileups! I am now recalling that the OS does not always
remember where one put an icon under the none option. There are
probably myriad factors for this, maybe even some bugs.
