#56199 — Sleep command

Fromdorayme <do_ray_me@bigpond.com>
Date2014-02-08 11:10 +1100
SubjectSleep command
Message-ID<do_ray_me-767E6D.11103208022014@news.albasani.net>
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

tells me I am

hibernatemode 0

So why would my MB not sleep in a sec or two when I give it a keyboard
or Finder menu command to sleep? It used to!

It is as if it is still writing to disk or doing something, maybe away
at the pub?

What do you get from 'sudo pmset -g assertions'?

What happens when you press the power button? (You might be surprised.
It's changed/)

It asks if I am sure I want to shut down. No, something is delaying
the sleep. It is not a huge problem and it is not more than about 30
secs but I do recall it being almost instant for quite a while, I like
instant.

Here is a bit of a log on the matter:

That 30000 sounds like 30 seconds in Australian. Right mate? So what
is holding it up and is there a way to alter this. I saw some things
about HP so (lamely) I unplugged my printer. No difference.

Put it this way, is there a setting to change this sleep count? It
seems to always take 30 secs to sleep lately.

then you have it disabled.

something else is causing the delay.

some of the possibilities include time machine and google chrome but
it's impossible to know what's happening on your machine without
looking at it.

Yes, I have been thinking just this. I have no time machine. I back up
when and as I please to an external portable HD which I store away
from the computer till needed. I thought some logs might help, I have
posted some.

Anyway, I have sent all of you first class return air tickets to come
and take a look. You must not fight on the plane with Jolly Old or
Doug, they don't like that sort of thing in first class, old boy.
Please don't drink too much on the way, I need you all sober. You will
have to get your own breakfasts.

Oh... and I get to keep your passports till you solve the problem...

The log messages that are most important are the system and console log
entries exactly when the machine wakes. Those messages will often tell
you why the machine woke up. If you know the approximate time of the
last wake event, you can scan the log to find entries around that time
and post them here.

I am happy to do this but why would the entries to do with why the
machine wakes up be relevant to why it takes 30 secs to sleep?

Brain fart. Replace "wake" with "sleep" above. The point is the log
entries will often mention what caused the wake/sleep event which,
obviously, can be very helpful in determining the cause and
appropriating a solution. ; )

These messages are suspect:

13/02/14 9:43:56 AM kernel PM notification timeout (pid 1400,
hpdot4d) 13/02/14 9:43:56 AM kernel PM notification timeout (pid
34560, HP Device Monito)

The messages seem to indicate that the driver for a HP device connected
to your computer is causing a Power Manager (PM) delay (timeout).

Try physically disconnecting the device in question from the computer
and see if sleep happens more quickly. If not, you may have to try
uninstalling the HP drivers you have installed to see if that resolves
the issue. Also, you should check to see if the drivers in question are
up to date. If not, you should try updating them to the latest version
supported for your operating system.

One of the first things I did few days back. No difference! I too
noticed stuff about HP. I also noticed stuff about an old wireless usb
dongle I once used for a brief period while travelling, there was
software. I dug many associated files out and chucked them (the main
apps were thrown out ages back). At least most of these are not now
being mentioned in the logs (there were so many references in the
getting ready to sleep stage!).

Not sure what novamedia is about, there are some plist files with this
name in LaunchDaemons, I have thrown them out just now!

OK, I will have to look into this.

Good riddance. ; )

Seems to be related to Vodafone Mobile Connect software.

Yes, quite. The other bits and pieces I have been finding were
connected to the old wireless dongle which was Vodaphone and so this
is one more bit. Some apps have a lot of lint!

In the future, do a Google search for an uninstaller, or uninstall
instructions. Often there is an automated way to completely remove such
software. In some cases when there is no automated way, nice folks on
the net have posted manual removal instructions.

I already had an uninstaller for the HP in my apps folder with the
app. It surprised me how well it worked. It even removed itself (the
uninstaller... this has encouraged me to try again to lift myself up
by my bootstraps).

I restarted just in case afterwards and yes, it slept *immediately*
then! So thanks for your help.

I then reinstalled from a fresh download, customising what I wanted
this time.

13/02/14 5:55:15 PM kernel System Sleep

You can see the end of the reinstallation of the HP software (I did
have the latest before but complete reinstall seemed to work)

With it installed (though I have not tried the printer yet since)
sleep is back *immediate*. So I am pleased. Thank you for your
responses.

Just remember this JR, I have not completely disbanded my posse
hunting you and the remnants of Balderstone Gang down but I did give
the boys a little break while we talked. I have told them not to rough
you up too bad before hauling your sad ass in front of Judge Roy Bean.
