If they don't result in a widely accepted reference implementation, they
absolutely *are* written to be ignored. Point me to the NNTP library
developers are supposed to be using. The evidence never seems to be in
your favor . . .

The alternatives are fine. They just don't approach the problems in the
same way as the old ones. Learn to use them. (A one hour fool around

Thunderbird filters. I have many (spam, assholes, topics) and so on and
the single filter def works across NG's. You might not like the form of
it but TB indeed filters quite well.
Other than that it presents posts. Clearly.
No issue.

I am an intelligent adult who is quite adept at figuring things out
quickly and adapting to new technologies. I absolutely *can* determine
that Thunderbird is junk after just one hour of use. The only question
left is whether or not they, or any of the other alternatives, care.
Given how little I see newsreader developers *on* Usenet, it seems clear
that they do not. Nothing about this situation is "fine".

Great for you, I guess. History is full of terrible people who approach
things with a "works for me, and that's all that matters" mentality.
It's clear you won't be expanding your world view, so I'm done with you.

You're missing the point: people who use newsreaders that don't display
Unicode properly *rarely* fuck up a Unicode-dependent discussion. Abuse
of Unicode, such as Laszlo's, is not a valid way to make a point.

I can provide ample evidence that shows a need for robust filtering.
You cannot provide any evidence that shows a real need for Unicode.
One of us definitely has visions that do not match reality.

A lot of apps do this these days - and like those you don't need to give
it access.

In Thunderbird you can have as many servers set up as you like with
whatever accounts you like. Clunky? Perhaps, but once set up, who cares?

I've seen this too in recent times with T-bird. It certainly was not
like this before (about 2 years ago). Recent versions are slow to fetch
headers. Hopefully it will get sorted out...

If you set the filters from the 'server' level it will apply to all NG's
under that server level.
eg:
news.eternal-september.org <- setup filters from here (left click)
rec.photo --not here
comp.sys.mac.system --not here
The minor fly in that ointment is that if you add a filter, it won't
retro-filter all the articles in each NG. You have to (from the filter
page) indicate which NG's need to apply the filter.

It's sort of like iTunes. It started to do one thing and then had so
many other things added over time that some things did not evolve nicely
and some things devolved.
Still, for me, the best choice - perhaps because I've been using it for
so long.
I have, but don't like, Unison very much.

I think you're over discounting T-bird. It does the essential right:
puts up the news articles to read. It filters. The style is definitely
not "Mac like", but it does the job.

The problem is not *that* it wants access, but the mentality of making
that the surprise starting point of the app. There is *no* reason
anyone needs to identify themselves at all to simply *read* Usenet posts.

You're missing the dumb mentality of tying the two together *at all*.
It should not be more of a hassle to simply be myself on every server I
use. And I do generally not dwell on setup issues, *except* for the
fact that the thinking behind them often is a very good indicator of the
quality of the rest of the app. That's why MacSOUP is a non-starter for
me, because its default assumption that I'm using it for POP email is
not a good sign.

Apps should not be trying to trick their users. Yes, setup code has low
value because it is usually run infrequently, but Usenet does not
benefit by putting up barriers to entry for a newcomer.
> If you set the filters from the 'server' level it will apply to all NG's

Again, it's about the mentality behind their choices of defaults. I
mean, do any of the developers of newsreaders even still *use* Usenet?
It doesn't seem like it, based on how out of whack their decisions are
compared to reality.
> It's sort of like iTunes. It started to do one thing and then had so

The professional thing to do is fix it. Re-define the vision of what it

It certainly wasn't the worst newsreader I've tried, and it may even be
the best choice for Mac users now. But that's all more a reflection of
the sorry state of newsreaders these days.

Not well enough to replace MT-NW. Again, the filtering issues are the
show stoppers for me. There is just no way I'm going to use something
that makes it such a hassle for me to kill by Message-ID. I'll go back
to using slrn on the command line before I use Thunderbird's poorly
thought out approach.

Your choice is to get over that or use some unsupported alternative that

Forget the *dumb mentality* of Thunderbird. It's been around for a long
time and evolved as it did because of its beginnings. If that's enough
to make you look elsewhere then have a nice journey.

1. Thunderbird is pretty much a non-profit, volunteer outfit (as you
recognize) so it would take a massive leadership effort to define in
some new way. Be the leader, or
2. See prior comment.

I have v2. I don't have many filters setup because I don't use it much
- but adding an offensive poster to the filter list seems the least
trouble of all. Haven't done it by message ID that I recall.

Right click and "ignore thread" doesn't do it for you, huh?

Then roll back to 10.8 and have a nice life. AFAICT MT-NW is dead in
10.9 and on.

I know; that's the point *I'm* making.

I will, thanks.

I'm not one to rule by force. If they *want* my leadership, I'm right
here for the asking. Otherwise, to quote the Animaniacs, it's a great
big Universe.

Users are not to blame for a developer's lack of professionalism. The
irony is that Usenet was dropped under the crushing weight of binaries,
and yet now ISPs will otherwise go out of their way to support caching
proxies and content delivery networks for the web and other services.
What I *expected* when I went looking to write my own newsreader is *at
least* some standard "libnttp.so" that took care of RFC's fiddly bits.
What I found is that most developers reinvent the wheel *every* time
they write a client, and their lack of professionalism makes the fact
that the code is open sourced next to worthless, because they aren't
writing the code *for* reuse.

No. When I kill by Message-ID, it means that a number of posters coming
from the same source (usually a particular server) have proven
themselves to be part of a "bad neighborhood". The *partial* Message-ID
that matches @googlegroups.com (or whatever) is what I want to filter.
Go ahead and give that a try in Thunderbird.

It is. As I have stated, I VNC into an older Mac to use MT-NW, and
others have given their own hacks. It's just a sad state of affairs all
around when there is no good modern Usenet client, and apologists try to
spin what we have as good enough. It reminds me of when all we really
had for web browsing was shitty ol' IE.

I found this with an email app a couple of years ago. I wanted to set up about a dozen accounts all at once, but there was nowhere in the account setup to enter authentication details. What it did instead was to prompt for these when you first connected. It got worse with outgoing authentication, because you had to compose an outgoing message for each and every account before it would prompt for authentication details. Too much hassle. > Apps should not be trying to trick their users. My conclusion was that the newsreader functionality of Thunderbird had been forgotten and left to rot while they modernised the mail side. I managed to dig out their test reports for the newsreader side of things and it was pretty plain that they were running a very limited number of predefined tests rather than trying it out in real life. -- Paul Sture

Why do you like its pre-fetching of headers if it's so slow? My last encounter with Thunderbird was several years ago when I was trying to set it up for offline reading. Thunderbird's idea then was that I downloaded headers, then marked which ones I wanted to read in full, then did another download. This was fine back in the days of slow modems (except that Thunderbird didn't offer any way that I could find of saying "download the lot", and marking each article to download the body on the next pass was extremely time consuming), but nonsensical when you have short chunks of fast access via wifi available (in a cafe for example). -- Paul Sture

Well, I'd certainly like it less if it were slow *and* didn't pre-fetch
them either.

When I last looked at Leafnode (http://leafnode.sourceforge.net) for
that sort of thing I noticed the same shortcoming (i.e., assuming that
"offline" was major mode). To my way of thinking, the connection to the
server isn't something the user should have to concern themselves with
all that much. A client (or proxy) should do whatever it can to make
everything seem "local". I agree that too much software, especially
newsreaders, are built for outdated modes of interaction.
