In North American English, to knock up is to make pregnant, whether by
design or by accident.

Now perhaps what you did was to give birth to a quick AppleScript ...

Here in Australia and surely in England and many other parts of the
English speaking world it has a wider use. You can knock up a meal, a
a makeshift table, it is making something in fairly quick time. And
yes, it is used in the case of pregnancy (and has no implications
about the length of time of the cause narrowly conceived, but broadly
it is about that it does not take long to do in the broad scheme of
things).

You used to be able to close windows like that by holding down the
option key and clicking the "go away" button. Now you can do CMD-OPT-W
but I believe it closes _all_ your windows.

Command-Option-W (or holding Option while clicking the close widget)
closes all windows *in the current application* - just as it has for
ages. There may be one or two exceptions by badly-written applications;
but this is standard behavior for Mac applications.

more proof that finder is a 'badly-written application'.

BTW, if you have way too many windows opened, one option is to quit the
finder and then restart it.

Thinker tools has a option to enable the "file quit" (actually Finder ->
Quit) on the finder, or alternatively, I think you can "force quit" from
the dock.

"Thinker tools"... *grin*

Another tip: You can view information about multiple files / folders in
a *single* window by selecting multiple items in the Finder, then typing
Command-Option-I or by holding down the Option key while choosing File >
Show Inspector. Granted, it's less useful, but depending on what you're
doing, it can be better than opening multiple Info windows.

some or all of them will reappear, depending on what was cached at the
time you force-quit it.

BTW, lest someone get confused by weasel-boy's typical useless comment,
both Command-Option-W and Option-clicking the close box does close all
Finder windows in Mac OS X 10.9.x (and just about every other previous
release in recent history I've bothered to try it in).

option click does not close all in 10.6 and 10.8, which i tested prior
to posting.

Well, not *all*, just the finder windows, it will leave app windows
alone. Still, this is a useful thing and probably thje way to go to
close millions of Get Info boxes. (Once I *restarted* in frustration

To be more accurate (at least for SL):

In Finder, all *Finder* windows will close on click on any Finder
window's red close button except a Get Info one! It will not work on
the any Get Info window (except on that particular window).

In other apps, various things happen with various techniques. Safari,
under some conditions will close all its windows if you OPT click
close on one window or CMD OPT W.

exactly, and contrary to what a certain other person claims.

safari sometimes closes a *different* window than the one whose close
button you clicked. i see this about once or twice a month or so.

I believe you.

It is a little strange that in Finder, Option click on red close
button tends to close all Finder windows including Get Info whereas an
Option button click on any Get Info will only close only that
particular Get Info window. If it is not a bug, if it is not just some
overlooked something in the OS, there might be some reason why these
are so special.

Anyway, was the OP not wanting to know how to close a whole lot of Get
Info windows? The answer, at least in SL seems to be ...:

* Open (if necessary) and close a normal directory window by Option
clicking its close button.

Get Info windows are like some dogs. They won't listen (or pretend not
to listen!) to direct commands when it does not suit them, but if
another dog does something, it will follow suit.

it's very strange, which is why i mentioned it.

it's obviously a bug, and one that likely will never be fixed, just
like most of finder's bugs, some of which have been there for over a
decade and counting.

that works but that has the downside of closing the finder windows too.

the get info problem happens when you select a bunch of files and do a
get info and forget to use the option key to get the inspector version
instead of the individual get info windows (which is also a bad
design).

then you have an absolute mess on your hands, yet apple does not see
this as a problem.

sort of like some usenet posters.
