And see, I thought Angeline Jolie was with... Tommy Lee Jones? No,
that's not right, the guy who sort of kind of looks like TLJ but uglier.
Damnit, I forgot his name. I'd be able to pick it out of a list of 100,
but can't dredge it out of my brain right now.

I'll remember 15 seconds after I send this...

I found out a while ago that she used to be married to Jonny Lee Miller,
star of "Elementary" and formerly of "Eli Stone." But that can't be the
ex that you're thinking of, because he certainly isn't ugly! :-) I don't
know who else she's been married to.

Another great actor, IMO.

So if I add a short three letter middle name to my name, do I have a

I have no desire or need to mess with celebrities. I'm already happily
married to a beautiful woman. But you go right ahead, if celebrities
are your thing. ; )

There are very few celebrities I would even want to meet, there are none

Wrong; I watch movies that I think I will enjoy. There are many movies
each year, and I don't the time or money to watch all of them, so I
choose the ones that I think will entertain me. I mostly use trailers
o make my decisions, but also rely on recommendations from friends and
relatives, and lastly, reviews by professional movie reviewers.

Are you saying that the actors are more important than the genress and
plots of movies? That knowing the names of Oscar winning actors makes
you a movie watcher? Even if you've never seen the movies they won the
Oscars for, or maybe never seen any of the movies they've been in?

You mean that you don't know about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, AKA:
"Brangelina"? I guess you're not much of a movie watcher.

How can a "Movie Watcher" not know of Broderick Crawford or Simone
Signoret???

My point exactly; recognizing the characters, rather than the actors,
is the hallmark of a movie watcher.

That's a long list of decent to very good movies you've never heard of.

Absolutely. Genres and plots are details. There are good movies in every
genre, and terrible ones as well. Plot? What the hell do I care about
the plot of a movie? Unless it is something with a effective twist (the
Crying Game) the plot is meaningless to whether I will see a movie as it
is something that is only important with the confines of the movie. A
bad story with great acting is still very watchable and enjoyable (Joe
Versus the Volcano) while even the greatest story imaginable will not
survive terrible acting (or direction).

The things that matter most to me are the director and the actors,
everything else is secondary, including the writing. Genre and plot are
so far down the list they don't even register.

> That knowing the names of Oscar winning actors makes you a movie

That NOT knowing the name of a well respected Oscar wining actor makes
you not much of a movie watcher.

Again, not much of a movie watcher.

I have no idea what your point is, but my point was that Louise Fletcher
is know for one role, and pretty much only one role.

I didn't say I never heard of them; I said I've seen them.

> > Are you saying that the actors are more important than the genress and

>

Right, and some of those terrible movies had outstanding actors. If
the script, plotting, and/or directing is bad, it's going to be a bad
movie, regardless of how good the actors are. If the script, plotting,
and directing are good, it's going to be a good movie even with
mediocre actors. With excellent actors, it will be an excellent movie,
though.

> Plot? What the hell do I care about the plot of a movie?

I care about the plot of a movie because without a plot, the actors
could just read the phone book. Acknowledged that some actors can read
a phone book and be very entertaining, but that's not the kind of
entertainment I would pay to see or hear.

> A bad story with great acting is still very watchable and enjoyable

Not to me; the whole purpose of a movie, TV show, or stage presentation
is to tell a story. Without the story, it is nothing.

> The things that matter most to me are the director and the actors,

To me, if the story isn't interesting, it doesn't matter who directed
or acted in it. Yes, bad acting and/or directing can turn a good story
into a crappy movie, and my secondary criteria are how well it is acted
and directed; I judge that by the trailers and by recommendations of
friends unless I'm familiar with the actors and directors.

I'm too lazy to go back and check. I certainly recall your saying you'd
never heard of most of them, and didn't know who PSH was.

I completely disagree. There are movies with terrible scripts and absurd
plots that are still quite enjoyable movies with good acting. Like I
said, Joe Versus the Volcano is on example. Terrible script, absurd
plot. Love the movie, despite it's many glaring faults.

So, every version of Pride and Prejudice is equivilant for you because
they are all telling the same story and the story is the most important
thing. That seems very peculiar to me.

I very much like the book Emma, but the only movie version of Emma that I
really like is Clueless. Albeit, I've still not seen the most recent
miniseries from a few years back, and it's supposed to be quite good.

Correct on that score.

Absurd does not mean bad. If it is consistent within its absurdity, it
can be a good plot.

To me, it was at best an OK movie.

I guess that you didn't read that very closely; let me reiterate, "bad
acting and/or directing can turn a good story into a crappy movie."

Knowing who was/is married to whom has nothing to do with what movies
they appeared in together. But to answer your question, one movie
they've been in together was Mr. and Mrs. Smith. They met when making
that movie, and that was the start of Brangellina.

Oh I did see that. Not a good movie.

Who actors are married to has nothing to do with movies and is really
something I go out of my way to avoid knowing about. Not only do I not
care about celebrities private lives, I *actively* don't care.

There is no set of necessary and sufficient conditions for "a movie
watcher". In other words, there are no definitive hallmarks.

Not to mention the rather good Doubt (with Meryl Streep) and Before
the Devil Knows You're Dead (by director, Lumet), Owning Mahowny
(depressing) and the rather good political thriller, The Ides of March.

Sounds about right. It is possible though that someone might be an
exception and just love and see lots of movies but take no notice of
names, knowing people by their actual physical features.

You are quite right, who has the time to see all the crap that goes on
with such things as Oscars. These prize organisations often have
*terrible* judgement! I know, because mine is impeccable.
