I talked to a company in SF that servers up ads that are "industry
based" rather than cookie based. I think this is close to the old way
they used to do print advertising. An advertising company would choose
a publication for it's demographics and market. These ads are immune to
cookie collection in the browser. A paint company would choose to
advertise on Home Depot or Loews web sites but not on the Yahoo web site.

More and more, companies are trying to get away from cookies and
tracking as users are enabling stuff like ad blocking plugins. There's
even a company that's trying to bribe ad blocking companies, in the good
old NSA style, to let their ads through.

It's a wack-a-mole situation. And I clear my cookies and all caches to
"known set" 2-3x/week.

I use both AdBlock and DoNotTrackMe by Abine, Inc.
I'm not a heavy web surfer but DNTM blocks an average or 200 tracking attempts
per day.

There are plugins/extensions for most browsers such as Do-not-track-me,
Referer-control and so on that help (generally) to reduce such. You can
set your cookies to reduce connections - but many sites demand cookies
be enabled in order to function at all (hostage cookies).

Flashblocking will hide whatever ads are Flash based (and save some
bandwidth along the way).

In the end it's: add as much defense as possible to reduce the noise -
but some will always leak through.

What other ads would you rather see instead?

As far as ads being targeted to you based on your browsing history,
get used to it. It's not going away. It's no coincidence I was bombarded
with "cheap flights to Iceland" Google ads for a month after I spent an
hour exploring Iceland with Google Street View.

Try to train yourself to ignore the ads. It then won't matter what they
are. Better yet, there are various ad blocker plugins available for
different web browsers.

Well, thank you, and thanks to all who contributed replies.

In fact, I am so trained, and I have Flash blocker and have used ad
blocker. Ads don't bother me one bit.

The odd thing to me was this one hotel, where I stayed in Las Vegas and
which I did not Google, but used their WiFi, keeps popping up, and I
already know about them. I have no plans to go to Vegas for another
year. Any other ad would be preferable!
They are wasting their money, but I am not going to write to so inform
them....

Not only that, we see that your refrigerator and your bathroom sink both
need a good cleaning and for crying out loud man, vacuum up those dust
bunnies under your bed. Also only tipping that blonde waitress 8% on
your quiche lunch order tab was pretty chintzy-- even though she put her
thumb in your iced tea.

WHY did you have to bring up his refrigerator??

DoNotTrackMe is a good solution for this problem:

<https://www.abine.com/index.php>

Combined with AdBlock, you'll have a much better browsing experience:

I got both from Apple's extensions page, but when I clicked your Albine
link, they wanted me to register. What's the difference?

No idea. I've also installed it via Apple's extensions page. I wasn't
aware of the registration thing. Sorry. That'll teach me!

Check out the recently-released browser called "Epic".

I understand that it uses the Chrome "engine", but with ALL
the "google stuff" stripped out.

It's designed to be a "privacy oriented" browser that
automatically blocks trackers, etc.

In fact, it has a built in proxy that can even hide your IP
address.

Looks to be a step in the right direction, insofar as
privacy on the web is concerned...

Some time ago, I downloaded the Tor Browser. I haven't used it much.
How does it compare with Epic?

I haven't tried Tor.

Epic seems to work well.

I've noticed that when browsing through the "IP Proxy"
server (hiding your IP address), web sites take longer to
load. Probably to be expected...
