Absolutely. Since that would involve solving the "time travel" problem
there's a good chance the >>> FTL problem would be solved as well (since
it was in a "galaxy far, far away").

Time travel automatically solves the FTL problem, even here on Earth. When you consider the planet's rotation and revolution, the Sun's revolution around the galactic core (about 150 miles a second), and the galaxy's movement through space (about 373 miles per second), to arrive at even the same spot on the planet, you're going to be far far away from where you started.

Of course we've heard of them. However beginning in about 1970 Canada
began teaching us that only hillbillies, publicans and republicans use

What's a yard?

Nope. Is that the Italian leader's latest underaged female "companion"?
;-)

That's because it would really be "1 609.344 Chilometri", but then the
Italians know better than to call it "*World* Series Baseball" and
(until recently) only allow American teams to enter.

...and once upon a time there were the Montreal Expos, but they just
couldn't make it work North of the border. Still the Toronto Blue Jays
persist, but they managed two WS wins.

Given that Toronto is hardly distinguishable from a large US city and
that almost all the players are American citizens I don't think you've
made much of a point with that.

A mile is now officially defined as 1862 metres. However, its original definition was one second (1/60 of a degree) at equator. (aka: circumference of earth / (360*60) and is used by navigators who used position of sun/stars to calculate their position and distance travelled (as well as current time). Based on that original definition, the circumference of earth at equator is 21,600 miles. Note that in the USA and England, a "mile" is random measure based on the size of some random person's feet who took some random number of foot steps. Note that some differentiate the two by using qualifiers such a nautical mile for the real definition and "statute mile" for the USA/UK one. Note that the kilometre was redefined from being 1/10,000 the distance between equator and north pole to being: http://www.bipm.org/fr/si/base_units/ "Le mètre est la longueur du trajet parcouru dans le vide par la lumière pendant une durée de 1/299 792 458 de seconde. " In both redefinition of nautical mile and metre, the actual distances did not change. So, being now referenced to the speed of light, the kilometre is better suited to space travel than the US/UK miles which are based on the size of dead person's foot. Of course, by being tied to the speed of light, consider the implications of your rulers when you are on the enterprise travelling faster than light. The rulers will have to expand/extend because the light inside the enterprise is now travelling at faster than the speed of light, so the metre will now be longer :-) (at which point, the size of someone's foot may become a more reliable measure :-) :-)

No.
A statute mile remains 5280 feet. A foot remains 0.3048 metres. So a
statute mile is 1609 metres (and change).

No.
It's one _minute_ (1/60 of a degree) of LATITUDE (always the same - no
need to be at the equator) which was the old Nautical Mile, having
NOTHING to do with statute miles. (This why nautical and aeronautical
maps with their latitude marked in deg/minutes are so useful to measure
distances)
Since about 195x, the Nautical mile has been defined as 1852 metres
(exactly).
The metre was originally 1/10,000,000 of the distance from the equator
to either pole before they figured out that the earth was somewhat pear
shaped.... It is now defined as you can find in the usual Wikipedia
article based on so many wavelengths of something not found around the
house.

Note that as a distance, a nautical mile is based on the equatorial distance for a minute. At the pole, the distance for a mile is 0. And now that a nm is based on metres, latitute is no longer relevant since it is always 1852. In the early days of navigation, you are correct that since they navigated by the stars/sun, the nm was a variable distance based on latitude (but angles/degrees were constant). > This why nautical and aeronautical > maps with their latitude marked in deg/minutes are so useful to measure > distances) Being of the digtal age, I have always prefered decimal degrees because they are far easier to input into calculators or programs that calculate distance based on lat/lon. > Since about 195x, the Nautical mile has been defined as 1852 metres > (exactly). You're just plain wrong. The common mile used in the UK, the US and
here before the metric system was the statute mile. Period.

No it is not and it never has been. It has always been a minute of
_latitude_ because it is constant (no convergence). It is also why it
is so handy to navigators. It's all over the charts.

Planet Tatooine is not that far. You can get there by jet aircraft. From east coast of USA, probably about 10 hours of flying including connections. Hint: It's in Tunisia :-) And a "long long time ago" actual refers to the late 1970s when it really happened. Time is quite relative. To some, that was a millenia ago, to others it was only 45 years ago :-) To some, Tunisia is far far away, to others, it is just half a day away by plane :-) And the moon of Endor where the Ewoks live is actually in California, in a National park (redwood as I recall). Star Wars is really not that far away :-) There is some confusion on the Birth Place of Darth Vader though. Some say he was born in Bristol England, with more recent reports have him born in Canada. (yeah, Canada produces some odd ones like Justin Bieber and Darth Vader :-) Note that the British born Vader was born that way. The canadian born Vader was actually born as Anakin Skywalker and transformed into Vader by Senator Palpatine. (Another reason Canada should reform its senate). I also have it on good authority that stories of Sasquatch are true. They are actually Wookies, and the most famous one, Chewbacca, was born in London. The things you learn on IMDB :-)
