Commentary: Apple's operating system and hardware must be so perfect that Apple fans discuss grammar because there is nothing else to discuss. I have not yet updated to Mavericks from Snow Leopard because I have no idea/documentation on what that REALLY means to me and what I lose from the change in OS, all the nagging stuff and how it can be disabled (auto save, versions etc) etc.

One can only assume you used "so perfect" ironically in a grammar thread because you know that it, like "unique," is an absolute and therefore there is only one degree of it. Kudos! -- Joey Dee

Yet perfection is also a process of eliminating various elements of imperfection. I like to hear people make comparisons uniqueness. "This is WAY more unique than that." I find some words--very, really, absolutely, completely--are really very completely unnecessary and don't really add very much more additional meaning.

To say what was meant following your imagined absolute rules for "perfect", Tim would have to have put the point in a quite different construction. He could not *just* have left out the "so". In general, sometimes it is hard to use a simple way to put a point without breaking some grammatical ethic. To ease irritations, consider that simple communication can trump grammar. -- dorayme

Someone forgot to told the framers of the Constitution that it's an absolute, since one of its purposes was to form a "more perfect union". That implies that there can be less perfect unions. In practical terms, absolute perfection is rarely possible. So describing something as perfect is usually incorrect to begin with, it almost always actually means extremely good. With that in mind, qualifiers make sense. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

Some inductive one along the lines of you can't get perfection in A, nor B, nor C etc... ? That is not much of an argument (but then, that is not entirely your fault, no inductive arguments are... not talking mathematical induction here). Actually there are many things that are utterly perfect for any reasonable idea of perfection. But first let's see your argument. -- dorayme

In the 1980s, I used an optical coupler to get the audio to a hi-fi system. Then I had glorious sound with video of comic-book quality. Nowadays, many homes have equipment for excellent TV sound, but it's often distorted. On a given show, one network channel may have better sound than another; so I suspect that it's deliberately distorted at broadcast studios. The industry succeeds by making program material bad enough that viewers welcome commercial interruptions.
