Hello.
4 GB of RAM is not enough for my Mac Mini (mid-2011; updated Mac OS X
10.7.5) since I multitask and run with VMware Fusion Pro (v6.0.2) for
testing purposes. According to About This Mac, it has both memory slots
in used (2 GB each; can't add more to it? :(). I would like to
maximimize this RAM out. According to its tiny hardcopy manual, I can go
up to 8 GB of RAM in total (4 GB each) with:
-Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (SO-DIMM) format.
-1333 MHz, PC3-10600E, DDR3 complaint (DDR3 1333)
-Unbuffered and unregistered
It says I can order new RAM from Apple store, but I cannot seem to find
it on apple.com? Did I miss it with my search and manual navigations?
How about third parties like from Amazon, CDW, etc. if Apple's prices
are higher? Are they safe/better to use?
Thank you in advance. :)

Actually, this is what I have:
http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=214A54E2A5CA7304
... but that Dabile's comment said 16 GB of RAM didn't work?
I am confused. Is it safe to install 16 GB of RAM or not? Apple says 8
GB is the max.

Hmm, I guess I will try two 8 GB then.

Many a Mac has the capacity beyond the original max value as RAM technology moves forward and prices come down. Apple does not update their specs when capabilities change. If Crucial says you can put 16GB in your Mac mini, then you can (assuming you gave Crucial correct information about your Mac mini). And Crucial stands behind its products. If they should be wrong, then will provide replacement RAM and most likely credit your credit card account.

Ah. So, Apple isn't even willing to update its web site to sell more
expensive RAM like in its
http://store.apple.com/us/memorymodel/ME_2_3_MACMINI ? I wonder who
makes their RAM.

Thanks. I compared the Mac OS X's system profile to enter on its web
site.

To change the specs on a discontinued model, Apple would have to spend money for tests and qualification for new RAM sticks and that costs money which Apple thinks should be better spent elsewhere.

You can put 16GB in that mini, and I would get it from Crucial or DMS. http://www.crucial.com http://www.datamemorysystems.com -- "Computers are useless. I have heard of this brand before. Others' prices are higher than
Crucial brand, so I am going with Crucial brand later:
http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=214A54E2A5CA7304
(2.3 GHz speed) or
http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=D281CDE4A5CA7304
(same price and model, but no mentions of speed) for $157.99.

Those are the same modules. the speed that matters is PC3-10600. The 2.3GHz is describing the Mac mini. All the mid-2011 minis use the same spec RAM. The price is about what I would expect to pay. -- He [Rincewind] wondered how old the tower really was. Older than the University, certainly.
