Well, we'll see how the Drobo is soon enough. Amazon was having a Black
Friday deal for $180 off, so I decided what the hell and bought one. The
'N' is for network, so it will live in the Garage connected to the 24
port switch.

I've had one for a few months now and love it! Just wish they had more apps (e.g. backup/sync) that could run locally on the NAS. A couple of tips: add a mini SSD in the accelerator slot. It really sped up performance and reduced video/audio hiccups when using the Drobo as a media server. Also, one good thing about the Drobos is that you can mix and match drive sizes. However, if you set it up for 2-drive redundancy, you could end up with a ton of unusable disk space if your drives are difference sizes. For example, if you have 4 * 1-TB and one 3-TB, 2 TB of the last drive won't be used. Otherwise, it would have to handle that drive and one other drive going down, which takes out 4 TB and there's not enough space on the 3 remaining drives to do that. Therefore, it's most efficient to have all the drives be the same size.

Nice purchase. The Drobo 5S I have doesn't have an SSD slot; transfer
speeds are much slower than the newer units as a result. At some point
in the future, I'll be upgrading to the 5D and attach it to a Mac to
share with Apple file sharing, because I'm not interested in relying on
SMB file sharing.

Isn't SMB2 now the default protocol that Apples use to talk to other
Macs with Mavericks 10.9?
