Subjectot window 7 guide?
Message-ID<l746ki$4tr$1@dont-email.me>
Trying to help a friend with various things electronic. Sadly, she's
using Windows 7 and I don't think she's up to plunging into new hardware
and a new operating system. I think she's pretty much at the very early
stages of computer usage. When I sent her an e-mail with the manual
for her tv attached she didn't know how to download it and I don't think
she knows how to navigate through directories.

I don't know anything about Windows and I'm reluctant to try anything on
her computer. I have a vision of hitting a wrong key and inducing a
blue screen of death or causing some sort of registry corruption.

I'm wondering if the Windows 7 for Dummies book would be a good
reference/beginner's guide or if some other book might be more useful.
Might keep a copy for myself if it was a good enough guide and intro.
Any suggestions?

You're in a hard place, not having the same computer she uses nor
knowing anything on how it works. I'd step away from this situation and
get her in contact with someone who can help her through her learning
issues. Some Community colleges, adult schools, and senior centers
offer classes in computer competency. She'd probably benefit from
attending that.

Really. You're running a Mac on different hardware. At best you can
offer her a shoulder to cry on unless you're REALLY familiar with
Windows and can imagine what she's doing in your head without doing it
in front of you.

Or you can buy a VM (~ $80 for Fusion or Parallels) and Windows 7 (~$100
for OEM CD) and run it on your system. Then start Windows in MacOS and
talk her through things together. It will probably be cheaper for her
to get help from somewhere else.

Yeah, you're probably right. I just thought if there was a simple
enough book, I could help her with the basic concepts and the book would
show us both what ever it was she needed to know.

Not many things are going to be simple for her if she chooses to stick
with Windows.

You are the one who mentioned her intelligence - not me. Do you honestly
expect me to have an opinion either way? I have never met the woman.

Anyone with significant experience with multiple platforms can tell you
one doesn't have to be particularly smart or stupid to encounter Windows
complications. Windows complicates things for its users with ease all by
itself. Other platforms remove a lot of those complications. Caveat
emptor. ; )

What makes you think saying this to an insane person would have the
desired effect? Please think harder about this in the future.

Did you have something of value to add?

I must admit that you are fully right.

I always liked the Missing Manuals by David Pogue, but I fear they would
overwhelm a complete newbie. Instead I'd start her with a copy of 'PCs
for Dummies' (Windows 7 edition, by the excellent Dan Gookin of the
original DOS for Dummies fame)

Thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps I'll flip through a copy in the

I don't think that it's wise to skip the basics.... There should be a
tut on CP/M for beginners out there.

Well I'd really want to begin her on assembly, but I couldn't find a
