#52690 — PGP and Mavericks

FromWilliam Munny <will@bigwhisky.net>

SubjectPGP and Mavericks
Message-ID<l72e2u$hrk$1@news.albasani.net>
The free version of PGP that I've been using for years to
encrypt/decrypt files I carry on a flash drive says it is incompatible
with Mavericks and won't run.

Work-arounds? Other encryption program I can use?

Wait until they come out with a version of PGP that runs on 10.9.

Or you can downgrade your machine to 10.8. Painful as you have to wipe
your machine and install from your backups.

Or find a machine that's running 10.8 and PGP and decrypt your flash
drive.

Not workarounds, really, but the problem with critical system stuff like
this is that you need to test it before upgrading so you don't get
caught with "I'm sorry, I'm not programmed to respond in that area."

Here's hoping you have backups of your 10.8 system.

Disk space is cheap now. You could buy an external hard disk and
install 10.8 on it. Then you could boot from either as the mood took you.

Any of the Mac-compatible GPG variants should do, no? Google is your
friend.

BTW, it's absolutely no surprise that PGP is stagnant. Symantec
purchased it in 2010 and has sqaundered and sabotaged it, as is quite
typical for the company.

PGP inventor doesn't use PGP "because it doesn't run well on a Mac"

Phil just needs to trust this
https://gpgtools.org/ instead.

Or run PGP in windows under a virtualizer.

I'm sure he's well aware of the alternatives.

I guess it depends on whether or not you're using PGP WDE (Whole Disk
Encryption), for your flash drive. If you are, you'll need a PGP
installation, capable of dealing with the encrypted disk. I'm
currently running PGP 10.2.0.1672 successfully, under OS X 10.9
(Mavericks). While not the most current, this is a paid version. It
functions quite normally.

If you're dealing with encrypted files, stored on an unencrypted flash
drive, and you're reasonably comfortable with operating from the
command line, in Terminal.app, GnuPG and GnuPG2 are available via fink
and MacPorts; the the MacPorts version is more up to date. There are
also a precompiled versions, which include all the ancillary
libraries and utilities. See <https://gpgtools.org/>.

HTH.

GPGTools was Mavericks (including Apple Mail) ready on the first day.
That wasn't the case in the past - but they were ahead of the ball this
time.

https://gpgtools.org/

It is OpenPGP compliant.
