#52664 — Mavericks - occasional complete freeze

SubjectMavericks - occasional complete freeze
Message-ID<Pc-dnXT1yv52dg7PnZ2dnUVZ_vqdnZ2d@giganews.com>
A few times since Mavericks was installed, the computer has completely
frozen for 20 - 30 seconds. No beachball, menumeters stop moving, clock
stops updating. No response to keyboard (eg: CMD-Tab) Only the mouse
cursor moves.

Seems to occur a few days after a restart. It does it a few times, I
restart the OS and I'm good for a few days again.

Seems to occur when I'm using Chrome - but also have various other apps
running when it occurs.

(iMac late 2012 i7, 24 GB, 1 TB Fusion).

Anyone?

I see this:

But it seems specific to the MBP.

(but at least in my case it resumes after a bit...)

Why not have a look at the console and system logs for events around
that time?

I did and there's nothing specific enough. Next time it occurs I'll try
again and immediately. (Other times I was trying to get other things done).

Hi,

I'm having exactly the same problem. I still could not identify the source of the issue, even though I'm always trying to find out in Console logs. Sometimes it happens just when I exit an application, sometimes just when I try to switch to another application.

However, it's always the same: mouse cursor working, *some* keyboard shortcuts working, but I can't switch to another application, CMD+TAB is not working, etc. It lasts about 5 seconds and then everything works again.

I haven't had it happen in a while now. We'll see over time.

Don't top post.

The short-term freeze makes me think the refresh is being interrupted by
something of higher priority.

When the screen freezes, does the clock in the upper right also freeze?
I always set my clock to show seconds rather than flash ":" because that
tells me that something has frozen even the clock interrupt of the
processor.

Run XRG to show you system resources at a glance.

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/10220/xrg

It will show you what's active during the freeze. If it's swapping or
growing the VM swap files or doing disk I/O. Once the system comes
back, look at the end /var/log/system.log file with tail. It will show
what the OS has logged recently. If nothing shows up, I'm guessing it's
hardware. That's the only thing that the OS won't see.

Try switching to a wired mouse.
