I also submitted a Bug Reporter (https://bugreport.apple.com/) ticket to
have local sync(hronization) features back in 10.9+.

I had to smirk when reading this thread, only because as a participant on
Microsoft's Community support forums for Windows Phones, this is a giant
deja vu. MS, in their infinite wisdom, removed USB PIM sync from their
Windows Phone OS in 2010, "forcing" users to sync via any number of cloud
methods (Exchange, Live/Hotmail, Google, etc.) and the crying, wailing,
and complaining had been a staple of the MS Community forums to this day.

Strap yourselves in- this will be a wild ride. My favorite part will be
those who threaten to immediately (and ironically) switch to Android
(which, of course, pioneered cloud-only sync, via Google. To this day
there is no native Android USB PIM sync- the few awkward wired options
are provided by third-party apps or "second-party" apps added to phones
by OEMs like HTC or Samsung.)

There are myriads of workarounds if your concern is privacy, including
simply running your own CardDAV/CalDAV server on your own computer (or,
alternately, an Exchange/compatible server app if you're an
Outlook/Windows user) and becoming your own "cloud". You'll still be
syncing wirelessly, but directly between your devices, rather than
storing your data on other intermediate servers.

I guess what surprised me the most about this, both back in 2010 with
Windows Phone, and now with iOS, is how many people are still syncing via
USB to create these vociferous protest groups kvetching about it. I went
wireless long before being "forced" to using a variety of methods based
on what was available at the time, giving up wired PIM syncing long
before the iPhone even existed. I'd think the number of people *wanting*
to sync via USB would be roughly equal to the number who prefer to
regularly communicate via fax machine!

And I think that there are still many people out there (many more than
you think), that would rather not put anything into any cloud - least
any private information. Might be different in the US, but in Europe

Fair enough, but as I said, there are plenty of "private cloud" options,
that allow you to sync your devices wirelessly with each other without a
cloud intermediary. I suspect a smart guy or gal will quickly take
advantage of this news to develop (or repackage a few open source tools,
to create) a simple solution for OS X users (much like how a small dev @
Akruto.com seems to be making a decent living peddling his $25 cloudless
Outlook-to-Winodws/Android phone faux-Exchange server software to cloud-
phobic Windows users. There's no reason it wouldn't work on iPhones as
well, if/when Apple drops USB PIM sync support from iTunes, since iOS
supports Exchange.)

The USB methodology was a reasonable one when we all had one or two PCs
and a Palm Pilot (anyone besides me remember the days of using your Palm
or Pocket PC to keep the contacts and calendar on your desktop and laptop
PCs in sync?), but it fails when we're trying to sync several computers,
a few phones, and a tablet or two with the same data store.

I don't think either MS or Apple are/were up to anything nefarious (e.g.
"forcing us to the cloud") by dropping USB support- they both likely just
hit a wall in their development cycles where they deemed the cost of
continuing such support was no longer practical given the robust and
popular alternatives they and others offer. With MS, it was their new
Windows Phone OS- the old Windows Mobile OS had USB sync, but the new
(and incompatible) OS was incompatible with the existing USB sync software.
Since the new OS had media playing software loosely based on the failed
Zune media player, they opted to follow the path of least resistance (and
resources) use the existing Zune desktop sync software to sync media with
Windows Phones, but because the Zune software (unlike iTunes) didn't
support PIM sync, MS declared wireless Exchange Activesync (which already
existed, and the phone needed to support anyway) would be the sole PIM
sync method, requiring no new sync software to be written.

As incompetent as most here probably think MS is, they didn't make the
decision lightly- they had data from their prior mobile efforts guiding
them, which told them far fewer than 50% of Windows Mobile users had
*ever* plugged their phone into a PC to sync *anything* (and this was at
a time when MS offered no free comprehensive wireless sync options-
Exchange sync required an Exchange server or a monthly subscription for
Exchange hosting.) So, prior to the launch of the new Windows Phone OS,
MS added Exchange Activesync support to their free Live/Hotmail accounts
allowing free wireless PIM sync with Outlook (using a Microsoft cloud
account as an intermediary) to any EAS-compatible device (Windows Phone,
Android, iOS, Symbian, etc.), rendering USB sync, in their opinion, if
not unnecessary, at least an edge-case scenario.

Fast forward to 2013, when Apple is releasing a new desktop OS, and,
well, we all know what Apple thinks of "edge cases"... ;) I'm sure some
one at Apple looked at the cost of building iOS/Mac PIM sync services
into 10.9 and said "F--k it! Let them eat iCloud! Android never had USB
sync, and Microsoft, the poster child for legacy support and backwards
compatibility, stopped supporting USB sync three years ago!"

Ironically, Apple, the first company to drop "legacy" floopy disks and
optical drives from their products is actually the last company to
support turn-of-the-century Palm Pilot sync technology (which also wreaks
havoc with less savvy users that turn on both wired and iCloud sync and
get to slog through the duplicate data that often creates.) So, while I
certainly sympathise with those who wish to keep their data under their
exclusive control, they are now a minority who will have to expend a
little more effort to continue (e.g. setting up a local server/"private
cloud") maintaining that level of security. (And, perhaps, actually end
up better off after all, with the conveniences and benefits of cloud sync
without the privacy sacrifices.) If Akruto Sync or Companion Link for
Outlook/Windows filling the void in the Windows Phone/Android ecosystems
is any indication, this might help bolster the market for easy-to-use
"private cloud" apps for home computers that might convince more folks to
re-examine their blind faith in the cloud products from Apple, MS, and
Google and at least taking a second look at the risks/rewards/benefits of
cloud services vs. using local servers for PIM, media, etc.

Or, we might all just let the NSA know everything there is to know about
us from our friends, to our favorite restaurants, to our kids' soccer
schedules... ;)

Is the current assumption that everyone with any device now has full- time
cloud access anywhere on the planet? Not true.

Everyone who uses the Internet uses remote servers (the "cloud"). So
let's change what you wrote by a little bit. It is safe to assume that
everyone with full-time Internet access, from the slowest dial-up to
cellular wireless to the fastest broadband, has full-time cloud access.

I don't have it the moment I walk out my door. I don't have it in my car.
I don't have it outdoors amywhere I've looked something up yet. None of my
internet- dependent apps work in such places. That"s why i load my iPad
with things that work amywhere, particularly for travel. I realize I'm not
"everyone", but I don't really believe I an unique in this reect.

I have no objection to cloud-sync being available for those who want to use
it.
I do object to it being the only option.

So do a lot of other people, apparently.

And BTW that cloud access isn't free when I'm using it on cell data -- does
it have to sync very time you make a change on the device when you're out &
about? or will it sync only on your demand (so you can save that $data for
what *you* want to use to for)?

I don't use the iCloud stuff. I've heard bad things here about
synchronization problems causing bookmarks and calendar entries to
disappear. I use Google Calendar and a client for that and have had no
problems. I use Google Contacts and the 10.8 Contacts + CoBook and,
while I've had stuff on the android phone not synch up, from Google to
the phone works just fine.

My iTouch 4th gen is only used for the Google Calendar client, music,
and books. My life is just fine without iCloud. When I run Linux, I
can still access the data in Dropbox.

This one is one of my favorite anti-cloud sync responses, since it makes
virtualy no sense once you think about it. Remember, we're talking about
syncing data via the cloud as a replacement for direct sync from a
computer to a mobile. Even part-time cloud access has to be more frequent
than syncing with your desktop, which by definition only happens at home.
So let's say you're going to vacation in Antarctica for two weeks and
won't have any internet access. Unless you were planning on bringing
your sync PC on vacation with you as well, you are really no worse off
without the cloud- any pending changes will patiently wait until your
next connection, just like with USB.

Bingo. And on a real-world vacation, which is likely to be just about
anywhere but Antarctica, one has frequent access to the cloud via
widespread WiFi hotspots. I don't know what all the fuss is about; why
some people drag their feet and complain at anything and everything
that is new and even slightly different--especially when the
convenience is so obvious. For those who have no need or desire to stay
in touch and up-to-date, I say that's fine, but then why do you have a
mobile computer in your pocket or purse?

When I go on vacation, I take my LAPTOP (MacBook Pro) with me. It syncs
via USB even when I am unable to connect to the internet. I often
vacation in locations where the only internet access is via a cellular
connection, and I choose not to use my limited access for syncing.
Personally, I think it's ridiculous that the only data path between my
device and the computer next to it, is via a server thousands of miles away.

I think I'll be looking into the options to create my own cloud. At
least then I can (presumably) bring a WiFi base station with me and
create my own local net. [Unfortunately, that means I'll have to delay
upgrading to Mavericks.] Ironically, I'll still be connecting my
iDevices to USB, because that's how I charge them.

OK, we vacation in different kinds of places. Got to have a certain
degree of luxury, including broadband WiFi, or I'm not interested.

Personally, I think it's marvelous that there is a data path between my
device and seven or eight others that may be on the other side of the

So now you'll be carrying your iThingie, your MBP, and a WiFi router.
Sounds like a fun vacation!

I occasionally visit my parents. They don't have internet, let alone WiFi.

I also greatly enjoy the national parks, which are often cellular free,
not to mention WiFi.

I agree. I just think it's ridiculous to send data ten inches via a path
that is ten thousand miles long.

I would prefer not to need the WiFi router. I haven't needed one up
until now. I guess that's just part of the cost of the upgrade to Mavericks.

OK!

While it is unreasonable to find Wi-Fi covering entire National Parks,
I can vouch for reliable Wi-Fi at the Yosemite Lodge (& a reasonable
amount of cell service), Wuksachi Lodge at Sequoia NP and at the
Wilsonia/Grant Grove Visitor's Center. Move away from any of those
areas and you are back in the wilderness so to speak. Cell service at
Kings Canyon-Sequoia is a bit more sketchy, and once you head down into
Kings Canyon it is non-existant.

Disagree. It's the way the packet-switched network operates. Why should

I use the cloud thing for email away from home because it lets me use my
regular mail program rather than the miserable excuse for one my ISP's
webmail provides. My Kindle and Nook books are backed up there, but things
in iBooks are backed up on my laptop. When I sync, my laptop is next to
iPod or iPad. I use the same cable I use to charge them.

Every so often I read about something newer devices or OSs do that mine
can't, but when I learn about the changes they trail along with them, i am
quickly dissuaded. This is yet another.

In order to check out the feasibility of using OS X Server to sync my
devices, I went to the App Store. It turns out that the version that
works with Mountain Lion is no longer available. The (new) version
requires Mavericks. [And -- according to the reviews -- it's buggy.]

So now I can't determine whether Mavericks will work for me without
first updating to Mavericks. Catch-22?

Which brings up what may be a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway
(grin).
Can one create one's own cloud remotely? For instance, could I set
up a cloud to back up my computer to at my Brother's house in Seattle.
Sorta like Kurtbonite (grin).
