I used to use Filechute with iDisc, then me.com, now I use it with
Dropbox. They have actually made teaming with DB very simple and they
are promoting the use of FileChute with DB. I find it to be a pretty
convenient tool.

I'm a long time user of Filechute and have just started using dropbox
regularly.

Easy enough to set up. just go to your Filechute preferences and add an
account. You will need an enabled "Public" Dropbox folder, and
Filechute even makes that simple.

I've fot them both there, but don't have filechute *within* dropbox. I
have my own domain, where I use filechute, and then have started using
Dropbox and so have a filechute-accessable "chute" for that. The former
chute isn't anonymous, of course, and the latter is.

Yes, it's a nice image for a desktop, but (technically) this is not a
very high quality photo. The huge dimensions of the file suggest that
Apple might have a 4K screen in the pipeline.

Hey, notice how I cleverly sneaked another surfing reference into this

/Library/Desktop Pictures/Wave.jpg is a 5120 x 2880 pixel image with a
file size of about 9MB. Those "grains" are small ripples on the surface
of the water.

Yup, that's what they are. Compare that to snow.jpg in the same folder
to see another example of small ripples on the surface of something.

I understand that water has ripples. But these really do look like
flaws in the picture. Or like someone was trying to imitate an oil
painting. The quality of the picture, though, is not what irritates me.
It's that the upgrade changed or deleted so many pref. files.

All the more irritating is that I seem to have been singled out for this
treatment. Not that I wish it on anyone else.

no, the change is there used to be a preference for new window, and now
it's gone.

doesn't matter who is at fault. at the end of the day, mtnw no longer
works.

there are alternatives, but it's still an issue.

the same issue happened with lion when rosetta went away. those who had
powerpc apps had to find alternatives.

The old behavior can be restored by unchecking "Open folders in tabs
instead of new windows" in Finder Preferences. Pressing the Option key
toggles the contextual menu command between "Open in New Window" and
"Open in New Tab", the default being determined by the Finder setting.

Thanks. I had not investigated Finder Preferences yet.

You can change that in Finder Preferences so the folder opens in a new
window when cmd-clicking.

That was a big disappointment for me, too. I filed a request to have
this feature reinstalled, at the Apple feedback site:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Such requests will probably be futile, however. My suspicion is that,
with each major release, Apple will be moving OS X closer and closer to
the iOS look and feel. They are encouraging developers to emphasize
full screen and single window GUIs.

Hey, guys, glad you like our multi-user, multi-tasking operating system.

But don't forget: everyone but your fellow geeks--in other words,
99%--will be much happier if you can make it look like a single-use,
single-task public kiosk.

(We'll be happier too, 'cause fewer people will notice we're not
perfect. #$%^#$% forgot to switch my #$%^$%^ mike off!)

Like you, I was finding this behavior in Mavericks to be more than irritating. For the life of me I can't fathom why Apple had to tinker with the fundamental way we worked. Why not simply add new features rather than remove them? The annoyance of the finder behavior was enough to simply keep me from using OS 10.9.

Well... this evening I think I found the answer.

A Logitech M510 Mouse.

Or... any of the M5 Logitech mice.

I have been using an alternative to the Apple mouse since I've owned a Mac... which is basically forever. Tonight it hit me... the Logitech mice installs a System Preference called "Logitech Control Center." So, if you have one of these mice, and you have installed the Logitech Control Center, then simply go to it, and assign the key command for opening folders in a new window. For example, the scroll wheel click on my Logitech mouse is now assigned "command + double click."

The result... when I click the wheel down on the top of my mouse on a folder... it opens in a new window.

While I'm at it... I use a Mac because the system (the OS and the hardware) gets out of the way and lets me do my work without having to fiddle and fuss and fight with it to be productive. That is the sole reason I have owned a Mac. With the release of Mavericks... apples wireless keyboard offing without an option for the numpad, the new Mac Pro which assumes we professionals are all just dying for more clutter on our desktop... and now OS 10.9 that determined I was better off having 1,300 of my book titles moved from a separate drive and literally buried in a hidden folder and renamed alpha numeric gibberish while at the same time totally doing away with very basic functions, such as "open folders in new windows," makes me wonder how much longer I will be able to stay on this platform. If Apple won't stop getting in the way of my work, why the heck should I pay them a premium price for having to fiddle with the most basic functions of a computer in order to be productive?
