#50555 — Please Apple - Fix the Perspective in the Dock

FromTaliesinSoft <taliesinsoft@me.com>
Date2013-10-24 13:52 -0500
SubjectPlease Apple - Fix the Perspective in the Dock
Message-ID<bct8kbFouhpU1@mid.individual.net>
As long as I can remember the line in Apple's dock which separates
applications from documents disagrees with the expected perspective
rules; that all lines that are parallel should lead to a common
vanishing point. If one draws a line whicch parallels each of the two
edges of the dock the lines will intersect somewhere above the dock. If
one were to then draw a line from the separator line in the dock that
line should also go to the same intersection. However as the count of
the icons to each side of the separator line increasingly differe in
count the aforementioned line misses the intersecion by an increasing
amount. Because of this anomaly I have for a long time been using
Docker to display the dock in a non perspective manner so to avoid this
disturbing (at least to me) appearance. However, at least as of now
Docker is not available for Mavericks. I will be having a visit to the
Genius Bar tomorrow and will see what kind of reaction I get. I'll post
what happens.

See if the new Mavericks-only version of TinkerTool still has the option
to disable the Dock's 3D effect.

That dividing line is basically just another icon (as are the Dock's
edges for that matter). To have it dynamically alter the angle would
simply add yet more time to the CPU's load being wasted on gimmickry
and fluff - the angle would have to be constantly recalculated and a
new graphic drawn or lots of diffrent ones stored.

Realistically it's a non-issue, but maybe it will be "fixed" when all
system icons and graphics eventually move to vector formats rather than
bitmap ones.

Yes of course. In order to prioritize your request, please help us with
the following information.

Please check one:

[ ] This problem is slowing down my Mac

[ ] This problem is making it impossible to run apps

[ ] This problem is causing deep marital stress

    [ ] I'm going crosseyed

    [ ] I have no life

[ ] all of the above

It is just that it is visually annoying, if not distracting.

Yeah, the hours upon hours of work I've lost by this constant

Will correcting perspective consider the effect of magnification? Also the
reflections don't point to the vanishing point or adjust with magnification. Can
I get a can of worms icon?

You are perfectly right! I have worked with OS X for years, and
_never_ noticed that problem; NOW that I have read your comments, my
eyes keep going to the dock and that line became indeed both annoying
and distracting...

IIRC you've brought this up in the past here. It did not get fixed.

Did you bring it up with Apple? Nobody here has any influence, BTW, and
it's doubtful if anyone at Apple officially reads this NG.

And frankly, it's a non-issue of monumental proportions.

True, it may not be very important. But really, if Apple is going to
show perspective, shouldn't they do it right (people have known how for
hundreds of years).

I never even noticed this until it was brought up a couple years ago
(probably by Mr. T). And I promptly forgot about it. And I'll forget
about it again.

Have you tried?:

defaults read com.apple.dock no-glass

defaults read com.apple.dock no-glass -float 1

Even easier, just set the Preference option to

    - auto-hide the Dock and you'll only see it when you need to use it

and / or

    - set the Dock size to very small and you'll barely notice it
      isn't "correct"

Nope. Doesn't work any more in Mavericks. It's been a stand-by for me
for years for previous iterations.

I find it pretty annoying. Instead, until I can get it fixed, I'll
just hide the damned dock. (which I do on smaller screens like my MBP
anyway).

I guess I could put the dock on the side, but I find that even more
annoying than the silly 3D-ish effect.

I've met some OCD people in my life, but egads!

Because my monitor is much wider than it is tall (and I'm an old
NeXT-y), I put my Dock on the right hand side. Coincidentally, it is
also not given a false perspective. Hope this helps you in your
"disturbing" struggle.

Until there is a perspective correct solution for the dock on the
bottom I've temporarily positioned it on the left side.

My Dock has the perspective disabled (via: defaults write com.apple.dock
no-glass -float 1; killall Dock) and is on the bottom and pinned to the
right corner of my screen, so that the trash is always bottom-right.

(this will be my first post with slrn...)

That is just plain wrong. On wide screens, the dock should be on the
left side :-)

I have disabled the 3d look for the Dock, and all animations for it. I
have just learned to not leave any windows under the dock.
