As long as you're not doing video. I would need external storage for it.
Heck, my iTunes library is larger than that. That said, I'd love one of
those new machines and would be happy to use that machine with a decent
NAS.

Is there data suggesting that most Mac Pro owners do video? I'd find
that hard to believe.

I'm a software developer and system administrator, and 1TB of storage is
plenty for my needs. At the moment, I've got a 480 GB SSD in this Mac
Pro, and I've got 130+ GB free.

Most isn't what matters, what matters is whether significant numbers of them
do.

And presumably significant numbers do given
that a laptop isnt really that viable for a PVR.

Having fun thrashing that straw man ?

And wouldn’t be if you did video.

Irrelevant to what happens if you use it for video.

Are you suggesting the Mac Pro won't sell well because the storage
options are insufficient for significant sections of the market?

No, I don't think so. I would guess most are doing development. But
certainly video is a large part of high-end Macs, and always has been.
There's a reason the MacPro comes with dual GPUs and can do multiple 4K
screens. It's not for XCode.

Yep. Like I said, as long as you aren't doing video the SSD on the
MacPro is going to be more than enough. However, the entry level model I
think has a 256GB SSD. That's a little small even for 'just' a developer.

[iphone/ipad newsgroups removed]

Agreed. I'm really just debating this idea that the available options is
insufficient for most customers.

Oh, yeah, I agree that the MacPro as Apple will ship it will be way more
than sufficient for most users. Some users will need to really make use
of those 6 20mbit duplex Thunderbolts, sure, but those are people who
will be spending $30,000 on a machine to connected it to multiple disk
arrays and 4K displays and who know what else.

I admit, I am puzzled at the lack of audio in. Is that really right? Are
you supposed to use TB for digital audio input?

I mean, I don't CARE, I don't use digital audio inputs on my comptures
anyway, I just find it odd.

I wonder about that too, but am not going to make too many assumptions
just yet.

Over the last few years there's been a saying "There's an App for that"
... now Apple are moving into a new era with the saying "There's a
Thunderbolt or USB adaptor for that".. ;-)

USB will probably more than suffice for a stereo input - there are a lot
of external samplers in a range of qualities and of course price.

One I saw in the store was a $25 USB dongle by creative labs. I'd guess
that's the very low end of the quality scale (and more than adequate for
most home recording) and it goes way up from there with multiport
balanced line inputs/panels/controls/etc.

You're funny, kid. The built-in flash storage would be plenty big enough
and fast enough for my day-to-day work. And I'm very sure I'm not the
only Mac Pro customer with that sentiment.
