<a href="http://polldaddy.com/poll/6477046">Take Our Poll</a>

iLounge reported in May that Apple is allegedly working on a “standalone
digital camera, specifically a point-and-shoot model.” The website further
said the device would deliver an image quality far beyond what the iPhone
and iPad could deliver and attributed its information to
sources, camera-related job openings at Apple, a re-trademarked iSight
filing, and Walter Isaacson’s biography on Apple’s late cofounder.
According to Isaacson, Steve Jobs named photography as one of three
industries that he wanted to transform.
With that said, a camera would be a decidedly high-end market that Apple is
seen exiting post haste (see Mac Pro, etc.). A REAL CAMERA with iOS camera
apps would seem cool, but Apple does not take this type of high-volume
market seriously. Most people are perfectly content with the amazing iPhone
camera…and the new iPhone’s camera can only get better.

P&S and "prosumer" DSLR are two different domains entirely.

That said I could see Apple making a P&S - even a very good one as long
as they choose a good optics package.

I can's see them making a DSLR. That is a whole different beast where
the optics are far more important than anything else. OTOH if they
teamed with, eg, Canon to integrate iOS into a Canon DSLR then that
could get traction ...

... as long as the camera function dominated the operation of the
device, that is.

it's possible. there's already talk of android based cameras. apple
really needs to partner with established camera companies though.

there's no way they can make a successful dslr unless they partner with
canon or nikon, and ideally both. if apple were to introduce an slr
with yet another lens mount, it will be a dismal failure.

even sony couldn't gain that much slr market share, and they had an
established userbase from when they bought konica-minolta.

right.

if it's claim to fame is auto-upload to icloud, forget it.

Uh yeah. What part of "if they team with, eg, Canon" did you have
trouble reading.

There's no way it would be both.

I doubt it will be any SLR maker - cause it won't be an SLR and it won't
be a team effort. It will be Apple period (with news accounts saying
where they get the optics (say Zeiss design manufactured by Sony)).

i was agreeing with it.

> There's no way it would be both.

then it will likely fail.

some users might switch from nikon to canon or vice versa for an apple
slr, but not that many because of the hassles and expense of replacing
lenses.

licensing both would get them about 80% of slr users who would just
need to buy a new body. no need to replace lenses.

sony users will have to switch but they're probably already considering
that anyway.

it's unlikely to be an slr because apple no doubt is looking to the
future when mechanical cameras are mostly history, assuming this is
more than just a rumour.

or they might pursue lytro. supposedly steve jobs talked to them.

It isn't happening period. P&S. High end perhaps. But P&S.

I didn't realise they had bought Konica-Minolta. They would have done
better keeping those brand names IMHO.

True, although there a slowly growing number of cameras that are blurring
that distinction.

Apple started the digital camera way back with the QuickTake, but dropped
out of that sector of devices. I doubt they've got much interest in going
back there now.

To a photographer (amateur or pro) there are distinct features that are
necessary to a SLR/DSLR. It is true that things like pellicle mirrors
and EVF's are beginning to make their mark but they don't subtract from
the essentials of a SLR/DSLR. (Pellicle's are not new to SLR's, but are
making a return in some cameras).

Some pros (city-beat journalists) could use a good P&S with a good
attached flash - that's all they really need for a lot of their shots -
esp. in the web driven era.

Canon doesn't need Apple or iOS to make great cameras. The same can be
said for Nikon, Sony, Olympus, and a host of other camera makers. At
the moment Canon's high-end DSLRs integrate nicely with the Mac OS with
Canon's own software. I'm sure this is true of other camera makers as
well. Professional DSLRs have a lot of electronics and a lot of menu
choices on them now; I don't know what the limit is before the camera
becomes too complex to allow for flexible and rapid operation, but 12
pages of iOS apps would probably stretch things beyond the breaking
point.

There may be gadgets beyond iPhone and iPad that Apple could persuade
pro photographers to buy, but a camera, be it a compact model or a
high-end pro DSLR, is probably not one of them. Yes, many, if not most,
pro photographers carry compact cameras alongside their high-end stuff
on certain assignments. Yes, they sometimes make pro-grade, marketable
photos with their compact cameras. I hesitate to say point-and-shoot
because that implies full automation. Pros tend not to go for that. But
there are some excellent compact cameras that incorporate both the
manual control that pros require and the automatic operation that the
lower-end consumer market demands.

Forget pro photographers. Apple is a mass market consumer electronics
company. They are not into "hobbies".

pro DSLRs are not mass market.

My guess is that Apple would produce an iShoot which is basically an
iPhone in a camera physical form factor with good lens.

apple has repeatedly called apple tv a hobby.

pro slrs aren't, but entry level slrs certainly are. nikon sold nearly
5 million slrs & mirrorless last year.

probably, although likely without a cellular radio, as that would be
yet another device for which to pay access fees.

No shit?

The main point is that Apple will likely do a P&S and for that they
don't need Canon or Nikon - but they do need good optics.

As to Canon and Nikon, they don't need Apple to make great cameras as
long as they are DSLR's. But here P&S is concerned it appears that
Nikon have already gone to the dark side:

http://9to5google.com/2012/08/20/leaked-press-shots-tease-nikons-android-powered-coolpix-s800c-camera-photos/

Most P&S's have pretty lame UI's and very little flexibility where
interfacing to other devices is concerned. An iOS (or Android) UI and
interface ability could make managing images a lot easier.

When it's not the silly assed 4-step Apple way, in any case.

My camera:
1. Plug camera or card into computer.
2. Copy photos to computer

Apple way:
1. Plug iPhone into computer (can't WiFi this AFAICT)
2. Run iPhoto
3. Import photos to iPhoto
4. Export photos from iPhoto to a folder on the computer

That is something Apple could make a lot simpler - and w/o the stinkin'
iCould.

It isn't the Apple way you are talking about - it's the iPhone way. I
can do the two-step process you describe with my camera on my Mac.

And the 4-step process you describe for the iPhone is really a 2-step
process if you _want_ to use iPhoto to organize your pictures, and
need be no more than a 3-step process if you don't want to use iPhoto
to organize your pictures.

I know. I do what I describe on a Mac. The iPhone way is the Apple way.

It's still 4 step because iPhoto is a bucket of shit in the bilges of a
tramp steamer on the Borneo coast.

99%+ of my photos are with a DSLR. So when I occasionally make a grab
shot with my iPhone, the incredibly idiotic machinations that Apple make
me go through set my teeth on edge. Indeed photos will fester on my
phone for weeks or month before there are enough to bother with the
stupid Apple 4 step.

Written on a Mac. It makes sense at least.

there's no need to run iphoto. an iphone shows up as a standard digital
camera, which means *any* app that can copy images from a camera will
work, including lightroom.

in other words, it's the exact same two steps as your camera or any
other camera.

or, you can use icloud and they're already on your computer in zero
steps.

BLOW ME DOWN!

There are my iPhone photos in Bridge!

Nospam - this is the thrid time in two years you've actually said
something useful!

I can custom re-name, number, tag, etc. all in one shot while importing.

THANK YOU NOSPAM!!!

(Of course I'd still prefer to just see them in Finder, but the above is
a vast improvement over the Apple 4 step).

I don't do iCloud. Won't do iCloud.

many cameras no longer show up in finder. apple isn't unique about
that.

nikon started doing that a while ago. not that it matters, because it's
easier to just pop the card out of the camera and into a card reader.

oddly enough, an iphone shows up in windows explorer.

you might not, but others do and with icloud, it's zero steps.

Or have, as we do, an SD card that you fold in half and then it's a USB
stick.
