Way better as a matter of fact. It provides a stable user-friendly desktop experience with decades of stable unix server software available (often for free) for users who need that. It provides a true multitasking environment (again, stable and well tested), and much better security. It is true that it disappoints the users who want crashes, viruses, instability, shutdown under the "Start" menu, and a really ugly UI stuck with Windows, but those users presumably _want_ Windows.

Yes but you don't get the point. APPLE COULD NOT MAKE AN OS FROM SCRATCH THAT WORKS!! Neither could they base themselves on PowerPC. It is a Joke!

The one in all their ads they said was 'inferior' when powerpc came out, it was definitely better than intel. the problem is that motorola and ibm weren't advancing powerpc as fast as intel was advancing their chips. intel caught up.

You're stating that Apple made one of its most important business
decisions in their history in order to stop people whining about the MHz
race?
Really?
(Note that Apple was firmly _in_ the MHz race.
In 2003 Jobs announced 3 GHz G5 laptops were a comin'.
Never. Never. Never happened 'cause IBM/Motorola couldn't deliver.)

It appears Xbox One (MS) uses AMD actually (8 core) having abandoned PPC.
It appears PS 4 (Sony) uses AMD actually (8 core) having abandoned PPC.
(Source: Wikipedia (I have no interest in game consoles)).
The RISC advantage of PPC and like architectures began disappearing a
decade or more ago.
In the end, RISC processors were becoming CISCier, and CISC processors
were becoming RISCier so any advantages held over x86 were moot. (And
always were moot since it's what the integrated system delivers that
counts).
Never mind issues such as the vastly expanded register set of the x86
over time (not just in width but in special case registers). Double
that where HT cores are used...

I said "used" ... as in the past models. One of the main reasions (and agin not the only one) they switched was to make it easier for developers, and it wasn't only the main CPU. From what I've read the new consoles are basically PCs in a different box, and slow PCs at that.

Developers didn't want a CPU switch (that means new compilers, tools,
validation). The only advantage to the console maker is possibly per
unit cost of the processors and likely cheaper commodity peripheral chip
costs.
As to performance - non-starter. Most of the performance in gaming
comes from the GPU's not the CPU.

The switch from PowerPC to "normal PC" chips means developers can make the same game more easily (relatively) for the consoles and Windows PCs (and even Macs) than when the consoles used PowerPC variants.

Not at all.
The heavy lifter (that you snipped out) is the GPU. Irrelevant to the
control CPU.
As mentioned elsewhere, the RISC/CISC distinction between x86 and PPC
has all but evaporated. They've each become more like the other.

Hardware yes (as I pointed out above - more commodity parts at lower
prices). So the console makers make out.
For gaming apps developers, a decided 'no'.
If you have a development base for a given architecture - you're
cruising. So it's a PITA when changing from one architecture to another
as the tools change and there are always nits in compilers, bits of
assembler that need to be re-written; debugging tools learned and
adapted and so on - for the new CPU arch even if your HL code remains
pretty much unchanged.
The tools used to do s/w under Windows are not the same as those for
game consoles. Least of all those that aren't MS based. And those that
are MS based don't run over Windows (the latest XBox has 3 OS' in it,
one of which is a Win8 variant for non-gaming apps (browsing and so on)
- but not used for gaming; a gaming OS and a virtualizer lies between
them. The prior Xbox had nothing at all of Windows OS in it).
So if you have stuff developed for PPC, a switch to x86 is definitely a
PITA. The console makers do not ask. They impose because they will
reap the h/w cost benefit (covering their own s/w hit in spades).
It's just business.

There's nothing to explain since you're talking through your hat.
In this discussion you first snipped out the inconvenient GPU point
(what gaming is all about) and then the issues of development and change
of development environment (big issue to 3rd party developers) and of
course the pesky fact that game consoles do not run Windows (so no
advantage at all there). Even the latest Xbox which does have Win8
amongst its 3 OS' doesn't use that for gaming but for web related activity.
So yes, best you walk off the field.

Good for me. You can't defend your argument nor assail mine so you
