I have been a long, long time user of Apple Mail and a couple days ago
things went wonky. I couldn't receive or send any mail and I couldn't
force quit Mail. After quite a few frustrating hours I lugged my iMac
to the Genius Bar at a local Apple store. The genius first ran a
diagnostic program, one that I had never encountered and one that I'm
assuming is new. Then doing quite a few things, things I couldn't
follow, he got Mail to work. An interesting thing is that some of the
interface features are different than the Mail I was running, a version
which I assume to have been the latest as I run Software Update about
once every other day. The current version, the one installed by the
genius, is 6.0 (1485). Unfortunately I have no record what the
preceding version was. Anyhowz, all is now well. At first, when I got
home, I was quite concerned as there were some 47,000 files in my
trash. I performed a SuperDuper! backup and then deleted the trash.
Afterwards I did some checking at it appears that all of my saved
messages, which date back to 2000, are indeed still there. This has
been an interesting experience with a happy ending!

Sometimes, doing nothing and coming back later works! It is sometimes
the case that server people are fiddling about on a mail server or it
is down. One of my domain hosts sometimes changes passwords without
telling me. It always amazes me. It would never happen on the planet I
come from.

It may be that he changed the preferences on Mail (either accidentally
or on purpose) so that it _looks_ different, but is still the same
piece of software.

Is that under ML or L?

Probably not related, but whenever I notice mail slowing down (less than
1 / yr.) I do:

Quit Mail (in your case, re-start after making sure Mail
is not loaded at start in your Login prefs).

             sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum

      Restart Mail.

That at least makes it immediately snappy quick.

May not apply to your issue, however.

I'm still on 5.1 (1278) under ML.
